Actual tree work for a change

Here are both trees. I learned a valuable lesson on the first... (that translates to I f'd up).... I got a lot of takeaways from the job... what do you see that should have been done differently?

Got "lucky" again..

I didn't like the look of the stb that caused this log to hit and roll.. That's a definite lesson for those that haven't seen a big to stub to roll a log after impact. I had set the redirect rings around the stub or I would have removed it.

Weather was calling for thunderstorms today. And it started raining pretty steady just as I finished the rigging... I was trying to get off the road before the downpour... Wasn't thinking about that stub until I got down and was looking the tree over for the fall. Took it far enough across the street to allow a little movement back towards the fence, but didn;t expecty it to traqvel this far...

I thought it was going to keep rolling right through the fence when it hit.... fortunately no damage.... as close as it gets though.

And your the guy who preached to me not to leave stubs. Over a stub I never left on the tree non the less.
FWIW, I'm glad you escaped that without damage. My point is, Shit will always happen. Especially when least expected.

With that big stub it was very much inevitable. Kinda my point.

You were the man doing the job. Why not take the little bit of time needed to remove the stub? And when you decided to just say fuck it and leave the stub a proper butt hitch should have been mandatory.

I’d have been leery of dropping that on the road and bashing a hole or crack in it somehow, even with the logs for protection.
The logs that were there to protect the road also acted as springboards
causing the spar to bounce much more than it normally would.. I personally don’t like the practice of laying out crib logs when dumping spars, but when I am forced to do so I always employ a butt hitch.

The way I see it leaving that big stub, the use of crib logs, ignoring the gentle slope headed towards the fence, and the lack of a butt hitch were a series of questionable judgment calls that led to this inevitable conclusion.

Your completely mistakes about the crib logs here. If you had more experience with them, you would know that crib logs can be used to steer the but/log after impact.

In this case they reduced the roll by keeping the log from reaching ground level.

I'll explain about leaving the stub later.

We have clear video evidence that your judgment concerning the large stub was faulty.

We also have clear video evidence that those crib logs were in fact a spring board and that they actually encouraged the log to roll, “steering” it straight towards the fence.

Own it, learn from it, and move on.

anyone that looks at the video and thinks the crib log added to the the undesired movement, that is the roll of the log towards the fence is an idiot. I don't normally think of you as an idiot.. ahole yes, idiot no...

It was not the bounce off the crib logs that cause the rotation and therefore movement towards the fence. The crib logs were level or even leaning slightly away from the fence

But in this case idiot... the stub is what casued the log to roll.. the farther out the stub sticks from the main stem, the more rotation it's going to cause ... the extra height of the crib log kept the main stem up off the blacktop had the effect of shortening the length of the stub from the ground, and thus reducing rotation. Without the cribbing logs, the main stem would have dropped another 6" or more. All that downward momentum dropping another 6"+ would have exponetially added to the rotation.... and likely had the piece roll all the way over stub and possibly jump the locust stump in the foreground.

If you look closely at the first cribbing log closest to the tree, in the beginning of the video, it's not a flat log. It's part of a co-dom stem with the swelling at the co-dom acting as a inclined plane away from the stump. You will also see when the tree does rotate it take a 3/4 roll and stops on the same stub that caused the rotation, right about the same time it would have stopped on the locust stump in the foreground.

Anyone else here want to agree with Rico that the crib logs increased the roll of that stem towards the fence?.. You can all be idiot's together
