Accessory Cord Use

Re: I gave it a shot

I've found that the 3/8 tenex that Sherrill sells works better when new. As it gets broke in and fuzzed up it tends to bind up a lot more! I used this comination on SRT when clearing a steep hillside. Forget it!!! I had to break the Swaybish loose everytime I put my weight on it!

i don\'t know about this....

So I tried the tenex on safety blue. It worked. I could advance the hitch with no pulley. However, I did not put my weight on it, I just tied it, pulled on it, the tried to advance it. I had to put a quite a bit of muscle into it ot get it to advance. I think if I were to hang my body weight on it, it would be such a struggle to advance it, it's still better with a pulley.

rich- I sent you a private message via treebuzz...i don't know if you check them, but you should start!

Re: i don\'t know about this....

Hi, Nick;

I pull myself toward my t.i.p. first, then tend the slack in my climbing line. Perhaps that's why it works for me.

Rich: I found the same thing occurs with me using the tenex as you found. What I found out by continuing to use the same cord is making a minor adjustment with how the tension in the cord is distributed on each end allows one to continue to use it. Otherwise, if one adjusts the hitch so there is more tension on the top wraps than on the lower wrap to start, then one can find where the hitch will perform better after the cord is worn. The adjustment is minor and one needs to play with the cord to get a feel for when the tensions on each end stop the hitch from binding, but, still hold the climber in place. I have been using the same cord for quite some time and probably would not have figured out how to get so much life out of a single cord had I given up on it when it started giving me troubles. I kept using the same cord because of it's conditon and I didn't want to throw away a good cord with so much life left in it. I'm glad I stuck with it and the specfic cord I am using is going to give me a lot more life.

Re: i don\'t know about this....

5/16 works, bu 3/8 will help in control and burning your index finger. to prolong the lie of your cord, use a figure 8 along WITH your hitch (for backup) on descents. this takes friction off your hitch and puts it on the 8...

Re: i don\'t know about this....

A faster and less gear intensive way to save the hitch is to run the tail of the rope through your feet as if you were footlocking. Then, begin to descend and vary the position of your feet to get the friction off the hitch.

Re: i don\'t know about this....

Nick,

I kind of considered that, have you tried it? The motion dosen't seem to work out in my mind on DdRT. I actualy use the falling end of my line like a foot loop by stepping on a bight. IF the hitch will move on it's own it would really speed me up.

Hi, guys;

Perhaps my terminology may be confusing people. I can tend the slack in my climbing line using the schwabisch hitch without the aid of a micro-pulley and I do. Does this clear things up? If it doesn't there's nothing more I can say.

Joe- I think most people understand what you are saying. It's just that we've never seen it done before. Maybe you just have the perfect set up between your body weight, climbing style, climbing line, and the rope you use to make your hitch. I think I have to stick with the pulley :(

Cam/Icabod-
Have I tried it? Only just about everytime I come out of a tree! I use when one side of the line is connected to my saddle and the other end is going through my hitch. I take lock like I was going to ascend, then wait until the tension is off the hitch, then use my feet to descend. It actually ends up being my hitch and my feet. It works. I do it and I've seen other's do it. Good luck!

Nick: thanks for the reply. I thought I was confusing others somehow. I guess what works for some may not work for others.

I'll have to try that v.t. using the petzl fixe becket setup you guys are talking up sometime. I like smooth running hitches.
