A correlation between trees and crime?

Of course they do, because they provide cover...

Just some more junk science. They are looking at the splinter while ignoring the log.

Always hard to differentiate between association and causation, but the environmental social science expert always point to reduced crime in areas with more trees. That has also been shown, I believe, in the same neighborhood before and after a major urban planting effort. Some of that effect might be due to positive attention given to the neighborhood, irrespective of the precise nature of that attention. I live in an urban neighborhood and from my bed, all I see is tree canopy. Sure, sirens go by and what not, but the gentle green is calming. But sure, hard to tell what is due to the trees as such and what is due to positive attention and effort.

If you clear out the people and the merchandise and plant a forest you'll have very little crime. You'd think that planting a lot of cacti might have a similar effect, but it turns out that criminals just really hate to be near squirrels.

I know trees are tall, have branches with leaves at the end, and provide shade for people sitting under a tree, but I never would have known it can help reduce crime rates.

Also, good job for Blacks in Green (BiG) for providing a greener environment in the neighborhood in Chicago!
