We did this removal 2 couple of months ago. 54" Eastern cottonwood with an old lightning strike. It took 2 days to remove. The first day we worked on the brush and limbwood.

We used a balancer for most of the limb picks to keep them horizontal.

The crane was a 40 ton Terex. Day 1 was spent taking the brush out. Day 2 we started on the big wood. At this radius, the crane was good for 5,500#. First "big wood" pick was 5,000#.

At this point I knew the loadline was off plumb and tryed to push it to go away from me.

Yeah right, I'm gonna push a 5,000# log. I shifted around to move out of the way.

Always have the loadline checked for plumb before making any cut, duh.

If there aren't any stubs or tapers to choke on to, we will cut notches for the choker to fit into.

On big cuts when stretch is not a concern, we will switch to synthetics. Much easier to work with.
