54" cottonwood

Re: 54\" cottonwood

That looked like fun work. Still hard work, but fun nonetheless. That balancing setup looks pretty slick. Adjustable sling on the limb end of the sling?

I like the fact that you put the one picture of probably the only pick that was slightly off in the thread here. That shows how real you are. A true hardcore treeguy for sure. Great work my friend! /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: 54\" cottonwood

That balancer is comprised of: 1" hollow braid with an eye splice at each end, 30' long; 3/4" hollow braid spliced in a loop for the prusik w/ a 1" wire rope thimble to prevent rope damage from the crane hook.
We had 4 Liftex round slings, 4,200# rating choked, that choker hitched onto the wood. The round slings are anchored to the balancer with a 1" screw pin shackles.
We did a crane job yesterday with a 40 ton (diseased Amer. elm) and we used 30' spider legs instead of the balancer. They were easier to work with. One end is eye spliced and hangs on the hook via screw pin shackle. The other end is tied to the limb. One branch had 4 legs, alot had 2 or 3 legs. Some pics were taken. I'll see if I can get em.

Re: 54\" cottonwood

Nice job Norm! The stump cut pic looks close to popping off. Im sure it the pic angle. There is an osha inspector showing a newspaper clipping of one of my picks as a how not too do. It was fine but the pic angle was deceiving.
As to the balancer do you have a problem with the prussick tightening up or melting stuck? Mine has a couple times on relatively small weights...

Re: 54\" cottonwood

Very nice work Norm, Jeeze that kind of project would keep my company busy for a couple weeks. (Can only squeeze so much wood onto a 1 ton) I get little sniffs of the bigger stuff when I sub out, but not lately. Thanks for sharing.

Re: 54\" cottonwood

Thanks Norm. I should have thought of that.
Now that you mention it it makes sense. It was a new operator and we had to get him to readjust several times.
