5,000 year old Indian Banyan Tree Declining

driving in India, even in a small town, is far harder than the worst traffic I've ever seen in NY NY.. And if you get into an accident and someone gets killed, their family will kill you before you ever get to court! That makes you think twice before ever hopping into a rental car.

There is a sacred Banyon tree in the courtyard at:

its the tree to the left of the temple in the top picture.. that picture must be a few years old becasue it was bigger and in much worse shape when I saw it.. they built a circular bench very close to the trunk, then back filled in behind the bench to approx 3' height. The remaining root zone is nearly completely covered with paving and heavy pedestrian traffic. To make matters worse, the area was flooded by seawater in the Tsunami of 2004.

As of Jan 2011 the tree was in heavy decline with lots of large dry limbs over a wide area, that nearly always has someone within the drip line..

I tried to make them aware of the situation and wrote a small report on the tree, but was told that the tree will be OK.. If the tree recovers without remediation, that would truly be a miracle!

Having spent a lot of time in India, the lack of real solutions being enacted does not surprise me. Sad, nonetheless. I just wish people would realize that no man will ever truly own earth. Earth owns us.

Son of a gun, I didn't realize you were a traveler. Next rec climb we should exchange some stories. I've spent some time in India.

That tree looks like it's getting the love but I think they should cut it a break and move the human factor to a new neighborhood.

They nailed a big sign to this tree declaring it 'Immortal'. I think that logic, coupled with the power of prayer, should be enough to save this tree.

"Sukhpal added that there is no need of any scientific preservation of the tree because that would invite some 'problem' for this holy area..."

Science just leads to pesky problems, we all know that

Adkpk, I can't wait for another rec climb. hopefully soon.

It's funny, in the US our philosophy is to squeeze as much life, quantity, out of organisms as possible, through modern science... trees and people too.

In India, with reincarnation, it is more fatalistic.

I think eventually there will be a movement back to quality of life over quantity of life.

would i rather be a lonely 6,000 year old banyan tree or one of the most important 5,000 year old banyan trees dying from too much love...

truth is we should be smart enough now to have the best of both worlds.

eden is ours for the making
