Do you mean the city that is the seat of government for each state? That is spelled 'capital'. 'The Capitol' is the building in Washington where congress holds it's sessions.

If you study classics /forum/images/graemlins/aaa.gif, 'the Capitol' is also used to refer to the temple of Jupiter (again a building) on the Capitoline, a hill in Rome.
