30’ Fall

@rico; Forgive my slowness, I'm not getting what you mean by your post above. I probably should understand, but I don't. It's a trucker's reference, yes? Thanks for your patience with me.

Tim
I was pointing out the fact that a Spiderjack 3 with a Rope Wrench on top must be a very long climbing rig/setup.
Yea, it was in reference to the old Trucker tune "Give me 40 acres" which is about turning a long set of double trailers around.
Dumb, I know.

So when I climbed dDrt I used a ring to ring. I also had a friction saver prussic and that took care of the possibility of the rings spreading to a point where they would slip. I agree though. You can decend SRT on a dDrt system for some length. It's not efficient but it'll work for the task at hand.

Which deflects future shaming. A safety mindset is exceedingly difficult to develop in this industry or so it would seem. Look on FB and the number of times people get bent out of shape over a safety issue being pointed out.
The problem seems to be, and I’m guilty of it myself, being rushed for timenor just plain uncomfortable and tired. It’s easy to just do the easiest, fastest thing that comes to mind but fail to pause long enough to see the error of your ways. In the original example, it would explain what happened in this persons mind at the time. He just wanted down and thought he had the right thing going on at the time. I think if we play this game long enough, we will all be guilty of it at some point.

@Steve Connally was this fella the owner of the company you were renting to or an employee or sub or something inbetween. Protect yourself make sure his accident dosnt become yours. Alot of grey areas when renting cranes. Who owns the accident when the crane tips due to undisclosed underground utilies ect.

They own it. My hold harmless includes identification of underground hazards and set up. They basically own everything unless is a gross negligence on my part or failure of my equipment. My sling breaks I own it. I over pick and dump the boom. I own it. The pic falls apart and falls through the house, they own it. Branch breaks out, they own it. Driveways, lines, gutters, fences, they own it. Its pretty specific. If he had been on my hook I may have been under scrutiny but my contact deems they provide a qualified climber to perform any rigging with the crane. I'm sure it would be a tough lawsuit but I think my insurance would win it.

But thats the issue. He didn't have the rite thing going on

But what was the underlying reason? Was it lack of training? Being tired? Making a mistake? High? He used the wrong connection? I remember years ago I was super tired and, I’m embarrassed to admit, I slung a branch and my groundie said “ready” and I cut off the branch with the pulley?! It didn’t hurt anyone but wtf! That was super stupid!

Lack of training. I've done that stuff also rigging but never ever with my climbing system. Huge difference. Damaging property is regrettable but falling to your death is permanent. You have to self police and concentrate not allowing yourself to be distracted by anything. Not even fatigue. So far I've never almost cut out my tip, forget to connect a part of a climbing system or connect my lanyard to anything other than the proper place. I have developed a mental system over the years. Systems of check and double checks as OCD as can be. Its all part of my climb. I even connect my biner facing the same way every time all the time. If I do it differently it feels unnatural and causes me to pause and investigate what feels "off normal". I guess I may be alone in these practices but they work for me. Repetition and consistency. I can feel something funny inside me when I venture from the norm. Its kind of crazy but it works. I even know before I tie in that I forgot my handsaw because its part of the routine. Just like hitting the chain brake twice every time I start the saw and stow the saw. All part of my crazy.

What? You want to say alive and well, or something?

Yeah I’m pretty much the same! That routine has been interrupted a bit by the Sena system, my groundie will be hounding me for answers to questions while I’m involved in swapping systems. I have to say please stand by. Doing critical operations.
