20 acres of old growth for sale

The BS doesn't get you up the tree. It's a big slingshot used to set a line to pull your climbing rope into.

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome MasterBlaster.

I realize the BS dosen't get you 'up into the tree' in one go but is used as a perliminary tool to get one started. What i meant was in relation to the trees in the photo's, the branches look like they would'nt hold much wieght, therefore no good to shoot a throw line over - then again the photo's may be deceiving and they are the size of a gorillas arm! What's your experience/thoughts on that?

Cheers Davo.

Heck, I've never been in a Beranek tree. I'm sure the branches are large enough to be safe to ascend on. As long as you can get your line snug to the collar it should be OK.

Davo,

Welcome indeed!

Those photos dont do it justice. Ive climbed with Jerry before and the BS will set a line 200' when he shoots it. And the limbe you get are penty to start with. We climbed a 330' (give or take) tree with Jerry and he set a line in the second limb that was 200' up. It had to be 10" dia too. Plenty strong for ascending.

Heh, cool John, wanna go in halfseys?.... I've got $49 to go towards a down payment.

As regards me and big timber, I've virtually no experience there. I've never felled or climbed and removed a tree with even 3000 bf in it. The 10 cedar residential stand that we may do will be a beaut of a job. Here's another pic of the largest two. The bigger one is 160 feet tall, as measured by Scott Baker and his clinometer. It should scale out to well over 2000 bf of 32 footers or 3000 bf of 20 footers. (These are the trees that were so rudely treated by the developers.)

I do expect a job to come in that includes a doug fir that has close to 80 feet of clear trunk with little taper that is over 4.5 feet dbh and could scale over 6000 bf, as well as another big cedar and a big leaf maple or two that hopefully have some figure. (This is some of the world's most valuable wood- Ive heard of one log selling for 10k, and a log truck load for 18k, as well as a 2.5 bf piece of top level quilt bring $100 from guitar makers...!!!)

Great pics and story, jerry! It would be awesome if those fabulous woods could be preserved.

hey up top ... my hippy climber used a bigshot and zing it throw line up over a nice fat limb or group of smaller limbs and sends up a friction saver...leather rope condom type) and sets himself on a single line anchored to the base and walks his way up with a pair of ascenders and a lil rope grab on his boot. works sweet..takes about tweenty minutes give or take and makes it way easier than having to keep some huge fliplines around. i also had a climber that was old school logger type and just spurs his way up with a pair of long fliplines. the other joy is the long rappells, i worked there for four years and loved every bit of it. go to humboldt see and climb the redwoods, keep an open mind the loggers and the hippys can both teach a lot and they both have some cool climbing places to go to. but unfortunately they dont mix too well.

hey jer. would sanctuary forrest have the $ for it? i worked on some of their land out on the mattole valley. seemed to go for a ways..and they also bought some ground around "Luna". it would suck for it to be off limits like the headwaters although i heard the ccc are building a hiking trail in it. i thought about sneaking in from the fortuna side

dan's a good man, used to been mean as hell to the kids, did some nutty stuff to them, until he had his own awakening up in a tree, i'm glad he started to have a conscience(sp) he got laid off for his sudden moment of clarity, evil corporate bastards.now he has a nice small tree service of his own. he fell and sectioned down some of the biggest trees i have ever had to remove before for me.

i watched eric schatz and ox man remove some hippys on several different occasions and am now totally against removing people from trees. i used to be totally down for it untill i watched these guys do it. one of my climbers rescued a sitter who was left on a traverse, without gear. later that night my guy hooked up the most amazing shot with a BS from a neighboring tree and set a tie in for him and sent up a saddle. it is just dangerous political crap each side has good arguments, but when lives are involved preserve life first.if someone wanted to take me from a tree...well you know what would happen...somebody would fall and it wouldnt be me...
