150 year old red oak!

This was the tree we had to prune yesterday, 150 years old, and i guess 120 chest high. The house was build under around the tree. The house has a sort of tunnel under the foundation to save the root system. Even with this tunnel the tree has obvious stress from the whole building project....fun that:)?!

Hey, I want to see more about thse rubber mats, close up pic and how thick/tough they are ... I use foam, nice to sit on for lunch too.

Hey, good story but really ... what a weird place to put a house, nice work, must be a surplus of climbers in your neck of the woods to get 3 up one tree ... lucky you.

What people forget when they encroach into the trees root zone is although they haven't damage the roots ....

... rain no longer falls there, neither mulch etc, the whole soil situation changes and affects the tree. So the tree will not do as well as it could have if they built elsewhere.

Can be nerve racking though, cant drop a thing on the roof or whammo ... broken tiles and perhaps more. I hope the guy on the roof was harnessed as well?

Sorry no more pics of the rubber mats, but they are what the councils over here use for kids playgrounds under swings and stuff, 4-5cm thick, 30cm by 50cm tiles, made from recycled car tyres.

as for the house....well yip, not such a great move to build so close, what else happens when you build that close or around a tree is you change the whole micro climate in the ground by the added presure of the weight of the house. No more microrizza.

the other groundie was tied in, only my camera does'nt have a wide angle lenz....big roof.

a lot of the wood could be thrown over the house completly, that is from the tops, you're high enough. Just throw as hard as you can and they cleared no prob.

Kevin, speed line was'nt really an option, to low for the big deadwood and in the tops it would be to much hasel to have to keep moving the attachment point.

nathean, we do get a lot up these parts. But not usually this big. As a fast growing tree they are offten seen as a pest and removed to make room for the native sorts(robur).
