I haven't heard much positive about the ITCC event. But the open ascent events created at competitions not sanctioned by the ISA are a blast and the competitors seem to love them.

If you care enough to have a rant over it, step up and man the ring. Your rules. Otherwise, the people actually stepping up and making the rules will do it the way they want.

I'm trying to put together the list of Charlotte winners and if I can, all the Master's qualifiers since the thing started in 2003. All help gratefully received.

I would say carry on!
I started tree work late in life. I didn't think I'd ever use a chain saw, never mind climbing, and double never mind climbing with a chain saw. I thought I was just going to prune ornamentals, which I still love doing also.
My friends and family knew better than to...
OK, let's look at this single thing with an open mind. It's true that hearing protection constricts your overall sensory awareness. That's a hazard, and we'll all agree that it is.
You can mitigate that hazard by not wearing ear protection. Eventually, you'll have some permanent hearing loss...
I'm not saying anyone contributing to this thread necessarily thinks this, but on some low end FB groups, PPE is thought of as training wheels, or a crutch for those without sufficiently manly skills.

Like that, but obviously to a large central stem, or even through several if there wasn't one stronger than the lead you're using. Rigging rings could do that beautifully.
If the tree wasn't completely dead, you could probably have rigged small from it, while tied into the other tree, taking the...
Two ideas come to my mind. Take the dead top of first, so you don't have to wonder about its integrity while working below.
I would definitely redirect my rigging back over another part of the water oak to reduce bending moment, especially seeing as I was tied off on the same limb. I'd probably...
It's funny, you hear from the guys who say, "I've done it this way for 20 years, and I'm still alive".
But you never hear from the guys who said "I did it this way for 20 years, and then I died doing it that way" or "I did it this way for 20 years but in year 21 I became a drooling vegetable...
Some interesting ideas about working dead trees that one has accepted for climbing.
Spear cutting is something I've known about awhile, but it scares me. I should put that one back in the mental toolbox though.
In one way, working a dead tree that is judged to be strong enough to climb is safer...
I was so happy when I finally got laid off at TransCanada. It was a good company, but I grew to detest working in an office.

Hi ghostice. I'm from Cowtown too. I don't know whether you saw that. I've been in NC for 6 years now, but I spent 7 years arboring in Calgary.
The worst dead trees I climbed were there. Twice, climbed dead trees and discovered at the end the cause was stem girdling roots. Those things should...
