    Elm Prognosis?

I think if I knew that's what it was I would take it down. I could send to a lab. Its dropping limbs now and even aside from the root pruning issue I'm starting to lean that way.

Time to revive this thread, is it bacterial leaf scorch?

    Elm Prognosis?

Yes I have let the hose trickle for 3-4 days and sprinkler from grass down below overlapping entire root area

    Elm Prognosis?

Yes cut 3 was only made to remove that section after it was severed from the tree

Ok I will is the wound at 1 the only important one since that's the only route to live tissue? Remaining pieces should die over time and degrade?

    Elm Prognosis?

Yes that's right it was all one root from 1-5 but a big one! I had t exposed the area from 4-5 in the photos last night

    Elm Prognosis?

These were the cuts. There is some pink up above cut 5 but that is not a cut maybe a chip laying there

    Elm Prognosis?

Yep correct, I didn't touch the one on the other side of the tree. I haven't had a chance to look at the roots on the other elm, lord knows I won't mess with them ha ha

Levi yes all the same root, the second photo is a closeup of the left puddle area pre puddle And don't blame the other guys after I saw it and read up on it I decided to pull the trigger so its nobody but me to blame

"More benefit than damage" is the subjective part where arborist might have helped sway my decision but I decided to risk it instead of forking out $500 more dollars. My first 400 were certainly a waste. After reading for a few hours last night it seems this tree has all of the symptoms of...

    Elm Prognosis?

Well, you know I thought the tree was in decline and doing something at this point was better than watching the dieback progress year after year. My thought process was...two large girdling roots, cutting them may hurt the tree, but with the state of decline I would rather try. Maybe I screwed...

    Elm Prognosis?

Wow, what a butt kicker. Did I kill it? I decided to tackle that side that looked more deformed from the root. As I excavated more I found that the root continued around farther than I thought. First pic: I removed the left section and found another smaller one under it that I removed(second...

I do t think I can stomach the thought of spending another 400 bucks. I'm going to man up and do it tomorrow!

    Elm Prognosis?

Before I try to figure out how to do this...When I think about resecting that piece of root I just think about how many tiny tendrils it leads to that will die...but you are telling me that the pressure it puts on the collar, or other roots causes more problems is that idea correct?

    Elm Prognosis?

The photo you edited, I had actually just sprayed that rinsing the dirt off so hopefully its not decay. But those girdling roots put pressure on the buttressing roots is that what's going on? What is someone going to charge me to prune those? If its dead in a year I might have rather paid...

I'm scared to call anyone else! He billed $200 for the consultation, hell maybe I should have kept on my horticulture track years ago if ya'll can bill that per hour ha ha. Between the two of them I've spent $400 and I can't spend anymore. My neighbor was laughing at me for it. I've been jerked...

    Elm Prognosis?

That has been extremely helpful. The BCMA that came felt that the drought caused the effects we were seeing and didn't ever mention a root excavation so I was a little disappointed too. Very well could have a lot to do with the drought but probably not the only issue. Wow, I thought I could...

    Elm Prognosis?

If I thought I could get 10 or 20 more years out of this tree I would be so happy. One thing about my pictures that is a little deceiving is the smilax vine at this distance is hard to distinguish from the tree growth, so at a distance it makes the tree look like there is more healthy foliage...

    Elm Prognosis?

I just wanted to give an update that might be interesting to some...I had an arborist come out and he felt that it did not need to come down in the immediate future as most felt here and recommended pruning deadwood, but without the history couldn't know if it was progressing/stable/etc. After...
