Ballistol works as Rick said already. It also works great for getting burrs, gum, etc out of long hair. Sometimes it is helpful for undoing tight knots.

In woodwork it is typically used as decorative applique such as this mirror.

Birch is difficult to peel, need to get it in the spring. preferably when the leaves a just starting to expand.
