How Small a Diameter is Safe to Climb High (Conifier)

Can anyone Identify this Climbing Technique?
I came across this interesting climbing technique: I would like to learn more about it. Does anyone know where I can find more info on it? The reason i ask is that I want to climb some really tall white pines which have no branches for what looks like 100'. I may be able to shoot a line up...- sdeese
