What a great tree for climbing.

    Saw chain out the box

I match the guide angle most of the time. I can't notice any cutting difference in minor angle changes, but I sure notice when the chain starts to get dull. I hate working with a dull chain. It's hard on my old joints (and then I need to roll a new one).

    Saw chain out the box

Interesting. It makes me wonder how critical the angle is for getting the chain to cut well. I guess there are different degrees of "cutting well" too. For bucking a log, if the saw cuts quickly from only the weight of the saw, IMO that's cutting well. If I have to push, I stop and touch up the...

    jamming knots

What if the Class II fiber core has a cover, like endurabraid? Also, why does the very tight knot used in a soft shackle not reduce the strength?

    Simple soft shackle

Yesterday I made a soft shackle out of the cover of some scrap double braid. All it needs to hold is some coiled rope. The knot is just a distorted figure 8. The cord was in my splicing kit, and the tools were out for another project. It works well for the intended purpose.

As a sidebar, what stopper knots work well for Class II rope, like Amsteel?

    one handing over your head

You guys are funny. Since Daniel is from Philadelphia and you are from the PNW, your personalities are bound to rub each other the wrong way. Evo, all you have to do is look outside to chill. Daniel has to travel for hours to find any place that's even sort-of peaceful. Me--all I have to do is...

Class I splice for Class II rope

Are there any stats available for strength of a Class I splice done using a braided polyester cover and braided dyneema core rope? I have a non-life support application for a Class II rope. The rope's strength is way beyond the forces it will be subjected to. This rope is being used for a super...

Question MRS DdRT vs. SRS SRT

Why is this? This is the first I've heard that. Since I rarely do much with MRS, I'm pretty ignorant of the subtleties. I have a 16 strand that's my go-to rope for climbing. I also have a double braid that I like a lot.

What is your preferred method for whipping the end of the line?

This is what I consider the standard whipping technique (ABOK # 3442). This is what has come unraveled a few times, and why I've started trying other techniques. Maybe my initial wraps aren't tight enough or I'm doing something else not quite right. Maybe cutting the end too close to the...

Seeing the forest through the trees…

I'm getting an evaluation of my cataracts next month. Mine aren't that bad, but noticeable. My prescription is -7.5 diopters, so even without the cataracts my vision sucks. What I've found is that the super near-sightedness is actually helpful for closeup work like splicing detail. I'm a little...

What is your preferred method for whipping the end of the line?

I used to tape the end tightly with masking tape, cut it with a very sharp knife, then melt the end with a heated (propane torch) knife I used just for this purpose. It always left a sharp edge. I tried a variety of hot tools to bevel the sharp edge, but I would typically make a mess out of it...

What is your preferred method for whipping the end of the line?

I like to whip the unspliced end of my lines. I prefer that over melting the end, just using tape or heat shrink. Melting often leaves a hard crusty bump that won't feed through smaller openings very easily. The same with heat shrink. Tape tends to fall off with use. I've used just the...
