Been using a surgeon knot for a while. Holds well and still fast. Will give this a try.
I may or may not judge people based on how well their shoes are tied….
No data, but with a button knot, my WAG is same percent of cordage break strength as amsteel (150-200%). No idea with the other knots but probably less.
Nothing wrong with Tenex or Tenex Tec. Not as strong as Amsteel but better bend radius and cheaper per lb of break strength. Unless limitied by weight or size, Amsteel doesnt offer much for me
This one is 3/8" Tenex. $3 in material..... 1/4" Amsteel would have been $4.50.

Nice video and experiment. Thank you. I have been watching a lot of HowNot2. Lots to learn with these. Always good to compare the theoretical side to real world.
West Marine has a BOGO sale on new Lewmar winches.... Anyone else interested in one? From what I have seen 50% of new price is what used winches go for on ebay. I am open to size 40-46.

I agree about not having to force it. I can usually tell if something is off well before the end of the bury. A snag is different that things just getting tight.
Just lookin for a way to make it easier for kids. I have watched several splice videos by rope manufactures that show the use of...
For music wire, avoid purchasing coils because it is hard to straighten out. If 3' length is good enough, I recommend buying straight sections. I use wire in the .045-.055" range for 5/16"-1" rope and .029" for 1/4" and throw line.
Wire fid is definitely the way to go. I make longer ones for...
I have a mech advantage kit, not enough space to use it indoors/on a bench. With the sailing winch, it would nice not to have to untie a knot after pulling on it.
Read a few articles on sizing/pulling power of sailing winches. Sounds like they are sized by their power ratio. So a size 46 has...
Yeah, the break testing videos I watch in slow motion often show the eye gettig smaller before it breaks. When I tension splices on the Hi-Lift, they do suck in more as well. According to Hi-Lift specs, 4600 lbs is what it can apply but I dont think I max it out.
The winch manufacuteres...
Teaching the kids to splice. Other than the final buries, they can do all steps themselves. Premium Ropes had a video of them using a sailing winch and it seemed to work well. I will sometimes use a hi-lift jack but that is not an option for the kids. I know a regular winch, block and tackle...
Looked up the Weiss Walkie style leashes. Here is a mock up that might work without any special splicing. Just needs a small accessory biner. Unclip when they want a longer leash. Prob take some trial and error or good dog measurements to dial in correct length. I always thought you put a...
I just make the leash longer then tie an alpine butterfly close to dog (takes 2.5-3' rope). Better yet, just use a short leash. Does your sister walk the dog or does the dog walk her? People leashes are longer than dog leashes. Slip style ring leashes can be made so short that you dont...
I think it was USD. Looks like they have warehouse in North Carolina. Their price is fair IMO. The 6mm Ocean Vectran just aint cheap. Ha. How much of this stuff do you have on hand? It has come up several times in this thread and this is the first source that looks legit. I will have to...
