    Hey Look at My Crud...

anyone here good at snake ID? Found on a grouse hunt in the woods at a wet site in the Catskills region of NY. I’m thinking Massasauga Rattlesnake? Aggressive little bugger that would strike at my shotgun if it got close.

One of my recent work views. I’m not going to lie, I am missing views from the canopy quite a bit.

What would you do for this Cedar?

You can mitigate those risks of failure but you can not “cure it”. There are too many variables that are impossible to measure or predict. Any load can fail under environmental stresses, defects the risk goes up significantly depending on the defect. And that risk only increases over time, even...

What would you do for this Cedar?

I said that in my original post.

What would you do for this Cedar?

I’ve seen plenty of “reduction” pruning that resulted in a poor response of weakly attached branches. No amount of reduction pruning will address the defects of that limb to preserve it on its own. Stop pretending it’s some magic bullet that “saves trees”. There’s no such thing in tree care...

What would you do for this Cedar?

I agree with this sentiment. Reduction is a fine line and a situation like that especially can do more harm than good.

What would you do for this Cedar?

Man that tree is awesome. Preserve that limb as best ya can. Cables, a few brace rods and some reduction on it phase one.

    Reduction Pruning on Large Trees

The tree fits the space now but it won’t later. The best time to prune a tree is always 10 years ago. Find a middle ground for amount reduced and make good pruning cuts. If you don’t do it someone else will that probably doesn’t care as much as you do. Be realistic with expectations, the client...

    injury from Farmers field drift

Curious if anyone has a treatment plan for herbicide damaged trees like this or in general that they have found successful?

    Spotted lanternfly not a problem?

I’m in the same camp as the article. I’ve yet to see major damage and around here they mostly just hang out on the Ailanthus.

    verticillium wilt

I don’t think there’s any data anywhere that supports treatment of VW. As far as seridium canker and potassium phosphate fungicide treatment like agrifos Id lean more toward soil treatment than bark. But take the time to determine how much you will use (probably a lot more than you think). For...

Things that likely frustrate every climber at least once in their career

I think my worst was doing some clearance pruning from a house a year ago in an oak. Everything went so damn smooth, I was feeling so confident and good. Set line fast, fun limb walks, great rigging by my ground guy and finished way sooner than I anticipated. Go to pull my line out once on the...

Anybody tried the 25 cfm airspade nozzle w/smaller compressor?

Man if your soil conditions are anything like Colorado, and I’ve been told alot of the west down to TX it was similar, you’re going to want more power. I swear the soil was like concrete. I’d rent for a bit then get a large, capable compressor mounted to a flat bed truck.

    When arborists disagree

Fair points for sure. There is always the possibility of the advanced assessment reveals evidence for removal as well.

    When arborists disagree

My rational is if the trees are indeed healthy and low risk of failure advanced assessment tools like a resi and/or sonic tomography would support that. It’s more quantifiable data.
