What about support structures. A tree with that high a historical value, external support structures would certainly be justifiable. I have seen some structures that are quite involved and doing their job as designed.

Noisy, YES!! but they are like owls when they come back in to the nest when there are young present. Usually if you don't see them come in you will not hear them. And they come in quickly.
Our back yard Red Shoulders have raised a brood for the second year running. It is fun watching them. Their nest is in a Loblolly Pine about50 to 60 feet off my back porch and deck. I am waiting g the day I will have to renest one of the fledgling. Moss, I'll call you for tips when that happens.
