A summing up? The Tale of a Workplace Injury, continued

Thanks, it is the lesson learned the hardest way possible. I’ve change my approach to setting TIPs.

A summing up? The Tale of a Workplace Injury, continued

Yes. I’ll. Just say that PPE in the usual definition wasn’t a factor in this. It was definitely poor judgement in setting up my access system.

A summing up? The Tale of a Workplace Injury, continued

Treebilly shared the original post. I also wrote an article for TCI magazine in the March 2015 issue. Thanks Bart. I still climb and work everyday.

When an incident happens. A bit of an eye opener

The incident happened in 2014. It was just settled with the insurer thru the courts this January. I agree with the priority being the employee. My point is simply that the client will get drawn into as the owner of the incident site. It’s not about their emotions it’s about how they’ll respond...

A summing up? The Tale of a Workplace Injury, continued

Thanks, it’s quire likely they did. Of the final settlement they get 20% but only 8% from my amount. They do get paid during the process by the insurer (which is strange in itself) so quite possible the total does exceed the settlement. This is supposedly the best in the US. That makes it...

A summing up? The Tale of a Workplace Injury, continued

Yes, that was a big part of the challenge in settling, making it clear there are ongoing issues that will require future treatment. I have reopening rights that must be acted on within two years. Basically I will just keep reopening the case every 18 mths. A rather stupid way to deal with what...

When an incident happens. A bit of an eye opener

When we have an incident on the job where a worker is injured or worse killed our job site is investigated. What we may lose sight of is that the impact on our clients goes beyond the emotional impact. Their property, our job site, will be investigated for a personal injury claim thus...

A summing up? The Tale of a Workplace Injury, continued

Almost 6 years ago I had an incident at work. I wrote about on here and then in an issue of the TCI magazine while I was recovering. I returned to work almost a year after the incident and have been working ever since. All during the time since then has been spent working thru the system. It’s...

Knew it was going to happen.

The challenge for a new climber is being able to translate a gut feeling into something that can be communicated. That near miss needs to be discussed to identify the issues that led to the failure. No sense in having it remain quiet that will lead to brewing resentment.

Ahhh. I get it and was expecting to see a report of his incident. It’s a useful report but one that underscores the absurdity of the number of accidents and death in our business.

    Profit sharing

Bonuses can become a mind field that the owner then needs to navigate. For instance, in the case above, it’s great when you come out ahead on the day. Everyone will take credit. When it’s short, then who should really take the hit? Wa it a matter of under pricing by the salesperson, productivity...

    climb scared

To the OP, my high school electricity teacher taught me never to fear, it leads to rash responses. Respect the dangers and you’ll anticipate hazards and respond better. I keep a constant inner dialogue going walking thru each step citing potential hazards and steps taken to mitigate. When that...

As a reward or recognition of needed skills development? If it’s a reward then you may be undermining the company overall. The person who would be getting the training is already contributing and in the end become the one whom you are most reliant on. The person who appears to not be committed...

    climb scared

When it’s a newbie that is injured or killed it’s not their failing but that of their employer. It was up to them to properly train, coach, assess and guide them. The incident is a condemnation of their methods at the price of the newbies’ life or health.

    Very sad accident today...

I won’t call it plain stupidity, that infers a lack of knowledge or inability to grasp a concept. Certified techniques? Hmmm. I’m not 100% sure on this descriptor, techniques that are set forth in a standard, ie., ANSI Z133 ? Those are the certified techniques that any investigation will look...

We will only get paid better when we actually embrace the concept of selling the true value of the service we bring. Too much emphasis is placed on the physical work and not enough on the knowledge, experience, education, training and more importantly, safety factors.

We need to enforce our rules and refs. No more debating which ones we will follow and which ones are too inconvenient. If you own a company make it a pre-condition of work. Build that safety margin into your price so you can in fact afford to be safety first. Production isn’t negatively impacted...
