    Tree Trimmers on strike

rick, you should read the articles, they chip away at some of your main points. according to this, the agreement broke down Tuesday at 11:59 pm, the strike was in effect Wednesday morning, and the storm blew in wednesday night? Furthermore, the trimmers have been working for almost seven...

    Right between the eyes.

no fun for sure. I have been stung (among other places) in the septum of my nose by a yellowjacket, and in the adams apple by a mud dauber. A fellow climber once dropped his rope snap into the blackberries beneath his tree, and as he was peering down to see where it landed, watched ground...

    Best Deal on stable braid?

I remember a deal that worked out really well involving stable braid.... see, there was this big rigging job with lots of big heavy wood. The company bought a couple big fat spools of 5/8 and 3/4 stable braid specifically for the job. I kinda drug my feet, and they gave that job to another...

well, after seven years of teaching tree trimming for the Job Corps it's back to the wires for ol' Mr Speelyei. Sign on the books Aug 2nd, wait for a callout. I wonder if I'll remember what to do? let's see... split the phases, fill the bar oil reservoir with Garlon, switch back to a 4-dee...

Recreation tree climbing near Youngstown, Ohio

As long as you're 24, you can enroll. The students tell me 26 is the cut off age for participation. All of the Urban Forestry programs are good, but I am especially fond of the Oregon program at Angell.

Recreation tree climbing near Youngstown, Ohio

Donald, if you're younger than 24, you might look into enrolling in the Job Corps at a center where ACRT runs one of their Urban Forestry programs. Job Corps is no party, but you'll get a stipend, equipment, and free training to become a certified tree worker and maybe a Certified Arborist...

    When is it to wet?

another western oregonian here, with plenty of rain experience. Although I have wished we could call it off plenty of days on account of the rain, nobody I ever worked for has. Some effective ways I have found to deal with it: Full brim Bullard hard hat. Keeps the rain out of your collar...

    when riging off of Spar

pic 5 shows the climber ready to descend. With a little practice, you can do this extremely quickly, and it requires little or no additional equipment. It can be done with rope snaps or carabiners, and any harness I've ever used with dee rings. Without a dee ring, you'd need a carabiner to...

    when riging off of Spar

pic 4 shows the climbline passed around and clipped to itself. Next, you unclip your split-tail and push it through the bight that forms the Munter hitch, and push it up close enough to the tree that it will not interfere with your descent. Take up all the slack out of the sytem and unclip...

    when riging off of Spar

pic 3 unclip the terminal end of your climbline, and pass it through the bight of rope, and then throw it back around the spar and clip it to itself, to form a choker. I try to orient the gate up...

    when riging off of Spar

pic 2 so you decide you want to get down from where you are and you're on a bare pole. pull up some rope from beneath your friction hitch, and pass the bight through your dees or a locking 'biner. If you're using a split-tail, you don't need to untie or unclip anything, this is good... you...

    when riging off of Spar

pic 1 this is some average random dude using average random equipment. Doubled ended lanyard, 4-dee saddle, Ddrt climbline and split-tail. The technique works fine with other types of saddles, but you may have to hang a carabiner on your bridge if you don't have dee rings...

    when riging off of Spar

finally got some pics burned to a disc... this is a down-and-dirty simple way to rappel from a bare pole or spar. It assumes a certain level of familiarity and comfort, and is not meant to address every situation that can possibly be dreamed up. the attached pic shows the steps...

    Bend, OR. Arborist scene

Sean, if you're looking at making a move based on proximity to a destination climbing area, I'd put other areas well ahead of Bend. Las Vegas puts you minutes from Red Rocks, and there are any number of towns in Northern and Central California along the I-5 that will put you a few hours from...
