How does your company train newbies?

That's a great question. Training is key and not everyone is cut out for this type of work. We do on boarding with first day of training at our yard in the jobsite safety, chipper safety, typical timeline of a job... Then it's pairing with a mentor for the first part of employment where they...

Cutting sequence for downed, dead oak leaning against another tree? With pics!!

Smartest thing to do is to understand your limitations and pass if this is beyond them. Without being there to evaluate myself, it looks like the plan of cutting from the origin is the best spot, but you had better know how the trunk may move (abruptly) and the root ball. I'd also be certain...

Fatal accident 2/20/2022 in Brown Deer Wisconsin

I've seen the same thing a few times during a tree championship. One was on a bicycle and raised the caution tape to the workclimb while everyone was in there and the event was live. I had a physicist do the same on our jobsite at a plasma physics lab. He just never went in through any other...

Fatal accident 2/20/2022 in Brown Deer Wisconsin

Can't imagine being on a jobsite where this happens. Very sad. I'm going to use this at our weekly safety brief.

proper cut for a piece that is tip-tied

This style of rigging is a bit risky to me, especially if this is a sizable branch or section. If the rope person doesn't do everything just right or you misjudge the balancing, the piece can come towards you as it flips even if the rigging is away from you. Not saying I don't use something like...

    Tribute to a fellow Arborist

Some of you may have known and have heard that a fellow Arborist from Italy has passed on the weekend. Riccardo Ferrari was a kind, extremely friendly tree climber who shared his passion for trees and climbing (among other things) freely and often. If you knew him and think of his personality...

    KM iii max with Akimbo

You know it's kinda funny how everyone has a different feel and opinion on this. When we were resting different ropes with the prototype, I liked some ropes that other testers did not. I had good luck with the drenaline while others didn't. We also chose different settings. Kinda cool to me.

Limb Walking and Moving Around In Bigger and Wider Trees

It's a very good question in that it is a complex and common issue. The simple answer is- it depends. I look at each situation and pick a solution based on the options I see. As for my technique you mentioned, The M-System, (yes some renamed it the V-rig but not a big fan) it was something I...

    Hipster lanyard adjuster

You could go to a smaller diameter line. Just make sure it still holds if you push against the tree as hard as you can or try to srs on it.

    Unnecessary Death

This is a common theme in accidents. Sad to read this thread and to think how easily it could've been a story that was never told. Condolences
