Absolutely! The forest remains the template, with a seasoning sprinkle of the Garden.
One crew I climb for, every time the day is just "cut this one, cut that one," as if each visit, removing the lowest layer is going to reduce risk or allow more light in. It only takes one leaf to cast a...
yes indeed @Bart_ , it's an amazing time we have. Just celebrated his birthday!
I have showed him climbing, he still prefers to just free climb a Cedar here :) This year I will bring him up higher into the canopy. His interest is still growing. It's fascinating following his attention and...
Wow, I never thought of it that way @Phil . I do remember reading the benefit of pruning in the Spring too, where the tree is so active it is able to heal wounds readily.
Another instance of multiple pieces of information, seemingly (directly?) contradicting, to make sense of.
thanks for the...
I know I read that it's best to avoid pruning during a ~2 week period when the tree is real actively forming and growing it's leaves.
Being in the work world we live in, with many factors, where we may be pruning in this window..
are there any precautions or approaches to limit the effect?
My...
amazing!!
so funny, I had my boy with me today! he is 12, we rigged some stuff in his weight range (long maple branches) and he stuck with cleanup till we were done!
Today he learned the value of O.T. lol
got to read Narnia for a while during the climb. spent 1/3 of his day pay on fishing...
A recent client asked "how did you learn all this?"
if he only knew.... out in the woods and here at one of the remaining places a lively discussion is found, real questions are posed, considered and replied. One of few industries finding folks reading books in their spare time to...
I dig a lot of the finer points about holding wood. That triangle suggestion makes a lot of sense @evo . It combines with the "smiley cut" as more ideas for these scenarios.
great find on that drop cut video, @Phil . It's way more clear what happens to grab the bar. and good point about...
Thanks for all the replies. I tend to come ask here when I find myself out at the edges, running into things that didn't quite go well. I appreciate the chance to ask these questions so I can keep pushing my limits without acting like a fool.
The first Oak limb was growing into the top of a...
@Reach - yep. I knew it was a long shot.
The damage wasn't really too bad, I just look for these themes to improve on. I avoided the nearby cedar and chicken coop and got away with a bit of bark damage.
yes that was confirmed in my experiments!
It was a no-cleanup job so I was cutting a...
Sounds like some good action. I sometimes do a "safety kerf" a little ways back if a tree is really peely, like silver maple or such. This one was just mega strong fibers. I did do a backup kerf and cut the cheeks on a later one of these, it certainly was better.
Thanks for describing the...
I thought so too, I made the cuts in this oak limb closer to 1 inch behind.
they fell alright, but the tip dropped a lot. I couldn't get that familiar flat fall like a long maple branch.
I think the bottom cuts being deeper helps a lot to get this action.
it may just not be feasible with...
Thanks. yes usually I would cut beyond 1/4 (nearly 1/2) on a usual-size branch, here 1/4 was about when I began feeling the pinch on a big limb like this. I appreciate that technique. I've definitely pushed the limit of pinch if just bucking logs on the ground; in this case I was Not in...
Very cool. At the least it introduces the concept to a broader reach.
I adapted the worker-cooperative model to fit the form of a Private Express Trust; this was ultimately how we ran the grocery store cooperative. There isn't a dedicated legal form for cooperative in every state (they are...
Yesterday I had a lot of work in four trees, with few obstacles in the yard, so I was cutting big. One of these was a mature oak; I dropped the two lowest branches from it, each about 35 feet long, 12" and 16" diameter leaving the trunk about 20 feet from the ground.
I was making drop cuts...
gotta share this story from a friend.
He was a treework helper, about 19. The other guy is using a bow and arrow, with fishing line to set the rope. He fires off a few arrows, and the fishing line is snapping, and they are struggling through this.
Suddenly, a convertible pulls up with the...
Agree about the turkeys and hens. I like borrowing a holistic management view. Nudge the forest environment to favor turkeys (oak trees), owls (to kill off mice and small rodents that ticks eat on. encourage by making pocket openings owls can swoop and hunt in); discourage deer (beats me...
I have wondered about the 1/2+ notch cuts, especially for dropping a top, if it helps the center of gravity find it's way toward the falling side of the hinge.
I agree with @RyanCafferky , I always heard it was about giving yourself the proper amount of hinge wood.
Yes it's true. If you enter 90 degrees, tree from ground, it says it will take 0 pounds of force, which we all know aint true..
we were hauling an oak over the other day and I Was shocked at the holdnig power! I bored out the center of the hinge before it would come down. (it was sideleaning...
