Thank you @Shadowscape! Just ordered. I saw them but was reluctant due to my ignorance. I wasn’t sure if they were legit or akin to the $30 Chinese spurs held together with wire ties.
What would be an appropriate electrically insulated glove that would allow one to handle a service drop? I get that if it’s in good shape and not worn/damaged that you could move it bare handed. I usually use a dry stick or a fiberglass pole just because I’m afraid. I won’t work on trees that...
I understand. My dad and his family was from West Virginia originally and my mom was from Baltimore city. Very similar situation.
I grew up saying wooder (Baltimorean for water) like my mom but ended up saying water from mocking the way my dad said it.
We definitely have a Baltimore city/county dialect around here. We’re a little further away but it’s easy to pick out a Baltimorean. They will call you hon or babe (even guy to guy strangers) although this is more of the 50+ crowd.
Water is pronounced “wooder”

EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!!! You’re deadwooding a 4’ dbh with a small top handle on the saddle and no one else around. EVERY passerby asks if you’re cutting down the tree!!
A small group were rec climbing in a local park. Many folks asked if we were cutting down the trees. These are magnificent...
Everyone seems to have different tolerances for what sets the alarm bells off. If the tree is structured properly, I’ll rig light off a well dead ash while some say they won’t even climb them.
Usually, if I can see that the tree may potentially be unclimbable, I’ll put an alternate lift cost...
I’m pretty sure when I ordered a spool it was dropped shipped from the manufacturer. That’s what the shipping covered. Seem to remember the sender’s addresses was Samson. The spool was significantly cheaper regarding by the foot price. I needed a 300’ continuous rope anyway.
One book I’d highly recommend is The Fundamentals of General Tree Work by Gerry Beranek. Luckily Patrick (Muggs) reprinted it maybe 18-24 months ago so it’s available again!! You can get it on Amazon for somewhere in the $30 range I believe.
Most of Dr Alex Shigo’s books are excellent as well...
Even with the TM saddle nice and tight I like suspenders. They don’t seem to encumber me but act as an attachment point for my knee ascender’s bungee line biner as well as a 10oz throw ball. I used to hang a homemade telescoping hook off the back of them until it broke. It was nice for remote...
In Maryland I also see great numbers of SLF on black walnut and hickory. Very few have been spotted in beech and poplar. That’s just personal observation. I’ve seen nymphs near completely covering Ailanthus though.
It’s interesting to observe how they recognize the Ailanthus and instinctually...
I’m in Harford county Maryland and bacterial leaf scorch is killing many mature red oaks here. 50% of the canopy dies by the end of summer and then it doesn’t leaf out at all the next year. It’s pretty quick. We have many large red oaks around us. It may be the most common oak. There are good...
It seems like irony: what builds you up and makes you stronger also breaks you down and causes injury. Maybe there’s a balance somewhere in there?
In trees, it’s the lightest saw that will do the job effectively. I’d rather take a little longer on a cut with a smaller saw than get through a...
Love seeing youngsters in the trees. I take my young ones, nieces/nephews, and neighborhood kids up fairly frequently. It’s such a special experience for them.
In my short climbing career, I’ve never heard of anyone spilling out of their saddle. It makes me wonder if it is a reasonable possibility?
I’ve been upside down once during a short swing back towards a trunk. It didn’t take but a few seconds to become upright again. It never felt like I wasn’t...
My personal backyard wooded area beech (Fagus Grandifolia) is sparsely populated with beech nuts at this time. A couple others around it are densely packed. It is mature and approximately 4’ dia. and 120’ H. The other ones with more nuts I’ve observed are considerably smaller.
We don’t have...
