    7' accessory lanyard w/screw-in traps

It took me a minute to find the right carabiners to pull this off. Occassionally I need a 3rd attachment point in a tree, to snug me in real close for a difficult cut. I don't have a lot of natural reach. I could never be an alpinist, LOL. When I do need that additional tie-in I'm...

Stihl MS391 saw, 11 months old, 'dropped' its muffler

You R correct - I did kno that. I guess I didn't feel like expounding upon, what I meant was, 462 is the next saw up w/a significant displacement difference. I don't care if 400C piston is mag, titanium unobtanium or enriched uranium, LOL. I'm not about to pay $300 for 2 cc more motor and...

Stihl MS391 saw, 11 months old, 'dropped' its muffler

Stihl's Loctite on their factory issued 5X16mm torx screws is grey in color. Hmmmm... also one of my best buds is an ace mechanic, and he told me that heat is the way he breaks frozen screws when Loctite is been used. He's not very confident that's the answer in an exhaust application. I...

Stihl MS391 saw, 11 months old, 'dropped' its muffler

Great idea on paper, but given the fact that the 25" bar is the largest saw I own, I really need to get max depth of cut as possible. But I WILL be more careful of whomping inna future.

Stihl MS391 saw, 11 months old, 'dropped' its muffler

Well, I appreciate more of you weighing in. There's a LOT more to this now. Current status: *Had to buy a new 391 saw *11 month old MS391 now needs helicoils, another new muffler (3rd one), plate, & screws. Stihl won't warranty anything because my ex-dealer told them there are signs of...

Stihl MS391 saw, 11 months old, 'dropped' its muffler

Oh God I certainly hope not!! It Stihl ran pretty darn good while I was cutting after it fell off. A bit of stuttering under full throttle when cutting light, but OK under normal load. I'm glad to know you did not have this issue with your saw. I am going to be MUCH more careful about NOT...

Stihl MS391 saw, 11 months old, 'dropped' its muffler

Thought this worth mentioning, the MS391 I purchased in Nov 2020 'shook off' its muffler the other day. I saw that the muffler was coming loose, eventually developing a nasty case of the hippie-hippie shakes. Eventually it just dropped off in the middle of a job. Kept using it until the...

Proper collar cut for vertical stem?

since the stem is much smaller than the main leader, i'm thinking it's more of a sub-dominant stem. a IV chord stem. A plagal or Amen stem. (some music theory idiot humor there)

NEW version of CMI RP141 dual tie-in micro pulley - small holes!

yeah i don't have any of them things lying around, right? Ha! here's part of an email i wrote to CMI: 'As a daily climber, one of the actions we do repeatedly is re-crotch to get higher in the tree. Nothing aims, throws farther, and coaxes back to me thru grabby bark more reliably than heavy...

Proper collar cut for vertical stem?

The way i have this outlined... would that be a correct cut to allow healing? The homeowner used what little crotch is left to re-hang his VLF antenna, but i could always sling the tree to create an attachment point for him, and make the cut properly.

NEW version of CMI RP141 dual tie-in micro pulley - small holes!

Just a quick note, the picture on some of your favorite gear sites may look familiar, but unfortunately when it arrives you'll be stuck w/this. I like a lobster claw for my working end cause it doesn't entangle in carabiners. No way will that work w/the new piece. In fact, for a long time I...

A tragedy is unfolding in the Sierra Nevada..

You all are breaking my heart. I had hoped to do one of those climbing vacations early next year. So far as I know there's only one, Tree Climbing Planet. Of course, the sadness I feel is for potential loss of the majesty of these beings, and very little to do w/my personal experience. God...

    You Ever Work Solo?

I'm a one-man show, small operation, and I work solo everyday. Only occasionally do I hire a 'young bull' when needed. Different rates for skilled vs. cleanup. Of course, my clients know this and I choose them, and they choose me, based on less (or no) cleanup on my part, and the scope of the...

i JUST realized something... sometimes my saw doesn't 'bite' into material the way i'm used to. i've been wondering why for years. NOW i know! it's cause i have NOT been filing my depth gauges after filing my chain. Yes yes, i have seen in my saw manuals, all the info about how to correctly...

Fixes for tired gear, and the decline of Mfgr quality

Damn, this turned into a kind of "Adhesives 101". Thx! i've also recently purchased 2-part PC7, originally for an undersink project. takes awhile to dry but seems to be good as well. Although it's NOT malleable once dry, so not a fit for some of the applications here. May be worth mentionng...

Jeez, glad i asked. Certainly LOOKS faster than hand filng, which takes me about 20-30 mins for a 24" bar. Guess i go a little too slow? OK so on the subject of hand filing... i use the correct dia file, of course. i follow the angle of the chisel, and i file a few different ways during...
