i think a potential problem with this idea is that the carabiner will be "free to roam" and could get cross loaded.
i use the anchor and have never had a problem with it slipping if properly tied, dressed and set.....but, i would much rather use an eye splice.

maybe think about body positioning? if you can be positioned so your shoulders are above the cut, you will have more leverage. also use a hand saw for that final cut so you don't have to worry about running the saw so close to your body and in anticipation of a ride.
