This is the dilemma I have to resolve: What do I tell technicians doing gear inspection in regards to how to recognise a functioning set-up of a Rope Wrench? What's a correct configuration as defined by the manufacturer? What friction hitch cordage shall be used? What knot? What knot...
Petzl's statement (below & attached) looks pretty simple...
It is just a letter that in a nutshell says tree climbers typically do things differently and the standards aren't really relevant. The product was not originally designed to be used this way, the devices known hazards are...
Re: traverse of the north gully at \'The Chief\'Squamish
That was awesome Tiger! What views!!!
Would have been sick to descend down from the middle of it.
I sure wouldn't count my experience as a "failure" or an "incident", really just sharing the discovery of a potential incompatibility with a certain ascender.
And still, the wrench and hitch did nothing wrong. I did. I pushed it up too close to the ascender, and didn't realise the problem that...
Yeah hey i still really like the futura and the wrench.
I were really just pointing out this possibility in case no one else has come across it yet.
Never been close to seeing it happen in normal use while ascending, this was a result of the last stride and pushing the wrench/hitch up to set...

Very interesting, great info guys... hey Trev, any chance you got any video of the treetops ropes course job? Just wondering how it went.

Good info Trev, thank you. Definitely something we all need to be aware of.
The Futura is a cool design but it's made by Kong so it will never see daylight in my kit. Had that been a Petzl Ascension I'll bet you could've released the cam.

If the wrench side plates were milled aluminum, with recessed/countersunk bolt heads and nuts... problem solved. Just stating the obvious, everyone's probably thinking something similar.

Hey Russ,
Every component of the lock-up kind of worked against each other.
As in..
If you stand in the foot loop - you can't move/release the Ascender.
If you stand on the Pantin - you load it even harder.
You can't descend (without severing the tether) - the wrench is locked to the channel...
I had a little "moment" just last week. I decided to go out and help the boys on a job pruning some biggish (180-200') mountain ash at a treetops rope course.
When i reached the top of my first TIP at about 150' i got stuck! I put it down to user error and gear compatibility.
What happened...
Hi all,
The diff between Euro & US is different testing, but....if you guys don't have to wear any chainsaw trousers at all while climbing (weird rule) then it would be strange to be penalised by anyone for doing so...but you might want to check where all that stands for yourself. On the...
