Hello All,
A couple weeks back I met up with a number of Bay Area climbers to climb about in some Eucalyptus trees. Most of the group are professional arborists...with a few of us enthusiasts sprinkled in.
I had the good fortune to come across Brian McGovern from Woodpecker Certified Arborist...
Hello All,
Scouted some really nice looking oaks today. They trees have a lot of moss on them, but everything looks healthy (leaves, no exposed roots).
Is moss something about which to be concerned?
Thank you.
Njdelaney,
That's so funny that you say how they look. You took the words right out of my mouth - pissed off look to be sure!
You must share...is that owl tame or what? Just hangin out in a vehicle. Interesting.
Hello All,
I hope your week is going well.
Yesterday I made a nice step in tree climbing. Some of the people I climb with recreationally are professional arborists. They volunteer their time for some wildlife rescue organizations (Hungry Owl Project, WildCare) to place birds that have had an...
Hello All,
A great day of climbing today.
I recently located a California Coast Live Oak that is the best tree I've climbed so far. It's tall, broad, stout, well structured, begs for lateral and vertical movement of the climber. The only downside is it's near Hwy 101....but after numerous...
I think you're right. Most of us start with a saddle, rope, and a Blake's Hitch.
Then we start testing, and matching gear with the way we think, so we can focus on the tree, and the gear is merely a passport to the canopy. I imagine we all have a slightly different dialect when gearing up.
It...
I have a friend who is in the Coast Guard. He's in technology/communications. When on land (at the base), they follow all CalOSHA guidelines. He says, when they go to sea, you'll find yourself climbing a radio tower (with protection) in the middle of 20 foot seas, with the companionship of wind...
It's that spiral of silence that can allow things to go from bad to worse. What's the expression..."If you see something, say something."
Most excellent, JerseyGirl.
Ahh,
It appears that there's more than one way to skin a cat...or stow a lanyard as the case may be.
If I might be so bold...what I like about the system I'm deploying, with the end of the lanyard already connected to the Perfecto on the D ring, is if I need to use the entire lanyard, I'm...
I don’t even notice it…and what’s cool is it uncoils on demand when extending the lanyard (like coming out of a bag). And...when I've drawn enough rope, I clip the last chain link back on to the transport carrier...halting the delivery of unwanted rope length. Works like a charm! That's...
I’ve thought about adding a lightweight line protector, but the way I am stowing the length requires that I pull the excess lanyard through the prusik and pulley. I don’t think the sleeve will move through that. I don’t like running the lanyard against the limb…for the well being if the lanyard...
Good evening.
I must admit that part of the charge of recreational tree climbing is developing a facility with the gear. I suppose there's a degree of flow that occurs when you become one with the climb...the tree, the rope, the gear.
I feel as though I have my gear pretty dialed in. I'd say...
