Today....

I invested in these for my bar oil because we would pop holes in the plastic oil jugs
I buy 55 gallon drums of it and pump into these
No more bar oil rivers in the tool boxes
Not the 5 gallon size though just one gallon
You know it’s all over when you actually flip through the ULine catalog that came in the mail.

Today I did my first self lowering of a piece that was too heavy to toss! I don't have a small friction device, so I improvised by setting up a z-drag with a few speedline slings.

This was a fairly large Silver Maple, with some significantly large dead pieces that had started breaking off, so this is sadly, probably the last time this one will get pruned, but we aimed to buy them a few years to save up for the removal. I got to do the three branches the bucket couldn't reach.

you could take wraps in the tree or in the carabiner (when you are concerned with bark damage)

Definitely concerned with damaging the tree. I just knew for certain how this system would perform, and wasn't in a position to take any chances with the rope catching on itself from its own friction, or crossing strands. I was 60' out on a branch tip and I didn't want any shock.

Or a Munter (wears the rope a bit) or a ring with 1X or 2X biners (depending on ring size and rope size) or a scarab (works like a brake bar kinda). I don't care for an F8 for lowering cuz I tend to get crazy amount of rope twisting/ kinks. Some of the other friction gear is getting up there in price a bit so if it's a one off, don't know if I'd spend the coin (stuff like the RE Down Rigger while nifty is up there in $$). Cheers

I was using another biner to lower from, so basically a ring. I find the munter also twists up the rope in addition to beating it up. This rope has a super coarse jacket, which is nice when you need to grip it. I love it for speedlining and light rigging, where I like that little bit of friction. I have my eyes on a scarab, or maybe even a downrigger when money starts flowing again.

. . . . I have my eyes on a scarab, or maybe even a downrigger when money starts flowing again.
And if a gentleman was suddenly all richly cashed up, one could even go for a scarab in titanium for weight savings (at an admittedly somewhat more gastly price . . . . ). I actually sprang for a scarab in lowly SS from Wesspur cuz I got tired of twisting ropes so much. And it's midline attachable and you can lock it off and stop work if some sweet young thing strolls by the work area and wants to parle a while. Just sayin ! Cheers guy. :-)

Even the titanium is cheaper than a downrigger, though more brittle than SS. I like how small and light it is though. Can't argue with how simple and user friendly the downrigger is, but having the lock off on the scarab is a big selling point I hadn't considered. I may be too much of a gear slut to actually pick just one... Cheers buddy!

The only time I have heard that term is for tying a piece in the middle, like trying to balance it. What do you mean by 'belly rig'?
You probably do it all the time. Basically a slang name for double whipping or span rigging they are different terms with similarity a blend of the two if you will.. you can speed line from it, lift a piece on other side if you need and flop a top over into it ….. it’s belly rigging lol
Anchoring the standing end of the line & working from “belly”anywhere in between the end and the redirects you set on the moving side down to the ground or easily controlled in the tree if you rig it how it is best for that position You can then pull the belly between any of the redirects you’ve set up choosing the fiction based on adding or subtracting friction by the standing side or moving side of the belly you’ve created. This sort of shows a it but knot really

110,000 pounds of pea gravel later and 340' of trenches are filled! Septic lines, water lines, gas line, and the electrical to power the well from the house are in the ground! 1000002697.jpg1000002698.jpg1000002699.jpg1000002700.jpg1000002701.jpgMajor credit to my wife, who shoveled 90% of the rock into the wheelbarrows so that I could hustle loads continuously down the hill. The entire place is a steady 10% grade, and some of the trips were over 150'. I don't ever wanna do that shit again!!!

That's so much work! Also nice TDI- you running wvo or bio?
The bio diesel producers have all the WVO sources locked down around here, but at least that means that a lot of stations carry bio. I'll be honest, and admit thay I run whatever they get at the res casino station, as it is about $1.20 cheaper per gallon. when I get my house built and debt cleared, I will do better, but at the moment I am hostage to the same bullshit that afflicts most of our world.

I had my first accident in ages yesterday, luckily minor. I was up a dead madrone over a building, making snap-cuts, hanging my saw and then breaking off and tossing the piece. Second to last top, a small piece above me since I couldn't climb any higher, and when I tried to break it off sideways, somehow it came straight at me instead and I popped myself right in the face across the nose.

Right away blood started dripping down my face and onto my jacket while the customers were watching, embarrassing but I've worked for them for years and they know me and my work at least. I could tell it wasn't serious, but it was annoying as hell and a bad look to be bloody up a tree along a public road, so I came down, cleaned up, put a single band-aid over it which stopped the bleeding and went back up to finish the tree, span-rigging down all the wood which all went as planned.

A small incident and still not sure how I messed that one up, but it sure happened fast and could have been worse.
