Today....

Same basic experience here Steve. Found the Chicane awkward/clunky and horrible for limb walking and horizontal work. Was OK on straight up and down conifer work, but I have tools I much prefer for that kind of work..Always interested to here others thoughts on devices/tools though..

The only thing I like is the way that it opens. It's definitely easier than a slic pin with gloves. That said, I have gotten used to the slic pins, especially from using the RRP, and they don't mess me up at all, so the ZK2 on a caralink v2 is my constant companion. I have been considering getting an apex, but I still don't have a good reason to get another wrench right now.

I agree, as I have heard echoed by most, that the chicane blows for limb walks. Straight up and down, almost everything is awesome, especially mechanicals.

How do you like the chicane?

It's... fine. And I use it more than other devices... I have it, a RRP and Wrench in my truck all the time. Nothing will touch a well tuned hitch and wrench setup in terms of performance. The ZZ/Chicane just works for me with total consistency regardless of the rope, rain, sap and I simply don't have to think about it at all for it to do its job. You have accurately pointed out its biggest weakness is in limb-walking/horizontal movement and as fun as that climbing is, honestly I don't get a ton of that kind of work compared to simple spur removals where I'm hardly using a climbing line, or a spur removal using a top-rope like the photo showed where I don't really leave the stem, so I don't run up against that issue a huge amount. I do like playing with different setups though and change it up here and there.

Edit: I should give the caraLINK Tether v2 a try one of these days...

Shelter released a slic pin tool that a fellow buzzer named @John_KAYS designed. It was a very simple tool that simply slid over the end of the pin and pressed down the tab. I might be able to dig mine out, but I’ve been on an Akimbo for a hot minute and most of my other gear is in unlabeled boxes since the shop move,

For those sliders, I'm guessing you just push them in the kerf parallel to each other in the direction your pushing the piece? Sure is smaller and easier to handle than my little experiment, but I'd worry about dropping them...
Very expensive strips from NASA...

or remnants of thrift store nylon cutting boards cut into rectangular stacking plates for wedging.

This site is so annoyingly hard to load a picture. I usually get disgusted after 3 or 4 try’s and quit but I’ll try one more time. And,, nope. Fuckit. How can you guys seemingly post pics at will?
Test post

Same as other forums for me…iPhone with safari.

(That’s not me, it’s @southsoundtree risking his neck to help me out)

Apex on lowest friction setting, with caralink V2 shorty tether, is the bees knees for horizontal movement/limb walking. I can easily just reach up and pull on the top of the apex, which collapses it and pulls the hitch at the same time. It's the best version of a wrench that I've ever tried, and the only version that I actually enjoy...

....annnnd I just ordered the Apex and caralink v2 shorty last night.

I do like the adjustable friction ability on the Notch Flow wrench, but needing a tool to do it is annoying, something the Apex solves. And I like being able to take the SRT portion off easily like the Chicane, without having to mess with detaching the pully/hitch, something the caralink solves. So maybe it will be the perfect combo for me. Always more toys...

I did a deep dive into rope wrenches and when I measured up the Chicane(ry) I found they pushed the geometry of the pins and levers for max drag force so your limb walking comments are spot on.

Yeah, I just keep the apex on the lowest setting for everything and it's mint. The only time I dial up the friction is to take a long descent to the ground.

What was it about other Wrench setups you didn't like until finding the Apex/caralink combo?

The wrench always felt like too much friction for lateral movement. Perfect for up and down. I used it for years, but it frustrated me. This combo got me loving a hitch again after being on mechanicals for a while. Also like how the apex engages, with the shorter length

Pardon my ignorance ... I can't find an 'Apex' or a 'caralink V2 shorty tether' online. What are they? And where did you find them?

I found the mysterious new clanging rattle in my van after much searching underneath.

The center console between the rear seats has quick- connects to bars in the floor. I recently removed the console.

A small ceramic plate from a slice peach from yesterday vibrated or slid its way along the carpet until contacting said bar in the floor.

Doh!!

I once had my friends play a joke on me and stuffed my van full of kids toys and half eaten happy meals. I cleaned it out quite thoroughly, but for several months after, if I hit a bump just right I heard Eddy Murphy’s voice saying “holler atchya boy!” It was a toy donkey from Shrek that was hidden behind the fuse box. I was glad to find that one!
