Tom's Reuters article forgot to mention the 10,000 years of slavery prior to its starting point.

Bucknut did a pretty good job of describing it.

I'd add there were black owners of black slaves in the US as well and that the first legal slave was a black man owned by a black man.

So your argument is that just like those lesser civilizations, we were deeply involved in something as evil and immoral as slavery. And only after nearly 250 years, over 12 million Africans kidnapped from their homes, and a civil war did we finally come to our senses.

That definitely proves the we are in fact “the greatest civilization in history“. It’s “unassailable“ my man!

I think 250 years of slavery, 12.5 million Africans kidnapped, and a civil war speak to Americas level of involvent in slavery.

And I don’t know where you get your info but large swaths of Europe had already banned slavery by the time America did. And it took a fucking civil war for us to get the job done.

We also practiced a particularly heinous type of slavery known as inherited slavery. All while we were trying to justify our evil by portraying blacks as inferior and subhuman.

#3 politics can be left out, see #1 and #2. Do you see any issue with teaching that people have differences? Religious, orientation, racial identity, etc?
#4 you totally lost me? Are you trying to redefine equity? Treating others as they should treat you ends in cannibalism. I’d argue the opposite, not treating others as equal results in many of the horrors reflected within history.

Only deeply involved enough to result in a civil war with the Confederacy wanting to keep slavery. I can appreciate and be proud of the many great accomplishments in US history. I can also recognize the advantages of being a white male in the US. I’m not anti-white or self-loathing. I don’t think it is wrong to recognize and try correct past injustices. It’s unlikely that anyone on this forum is a member of the group that benefits most from our system. White, male, multi-millionaire/billionaire

Western culture prizes and nurtures things like science, art, education, ambition, beauty. The economic systems that have sprung from it gave us - and the world- everything you see. Light, flight, heat, medicine, food, technology. The list is endless. You ever bought an Iranian car? Ever been saved by a Russian medicine? Ever read by the light of a Turkish light bulb or surf the web on a Pakistani cell phone? Ever travel the world on a Moroccan jet? Would you send your kids off to school in Ethiopia, as they send theirs to school here?

Like I said before: the simplest way to measure cultural superiority is to measure how many want in vs how many want out. And I don’t see too many westerners (American or European) piling into boats or trains making desperate escapes to Cuba or Africa. It’s ALWAYS the other way around.

So why would the rest of the world routinely risk their lives and their children’s lives to emigrate to the west unless the place they were going was….. wait for it…. superior?

Why would you assume that I am conflating those things? I made zero mention of race... seems like you're fixated on that.

Maybe if the west didn't use the rest of the world as wage slaves to make their "superior" culture the peoples of third world wouldn't be so desperate to leave.

You wear Bangladeshi/Pakistani/Cambodian clothes. Many produced in sweat shops and/or using child labour.

Your phone/computer was constructed by unimaginably poor people in Asia using materials mined by unimaginably poor people in Africa.

Your car may not be Iranian, but many of it's components were likely made in Vietnam, China, Thailand, etc. And most of the raw materials were also mined under slavelike conditions in Africa and Asia.

Your idea of "superiority" harkens back to colonial "might is right" times when the West took advantage of, beat down, or straight up stole from the rest of the world and many have yet to recover. You earned nothing and are only at the top because you stand on the piles of corpses and broken bodies you have left in your wake.
