Throw line/ throw weight thread

Pros and cons to everything. I don't even bring the air canon with me unless I'm taking shots over 80'.

I've also got multiple BigShot heads/ bands that I can bring if I need the 'headroom' to take a lot of shots.
Agreed. That's definitely where the air cannon shines, and I usually ask a groundie to pump it back up while I reel in the throwline, so as to save time and effort, and not just have them standing around watching me work

If someone felt so inclined they could work out a way to fit a PVC pipe of appropriate diameter and length to the end of something like this and make a battery chargeable air cannon. Not sure what heights the psi would get you but something like this should work.

I don't know about the APTA, but the one 27RMT0N and I use is pretty accurately 1ft/psi, so that thing would max out at a borderline usable level, but it would encourage me to use it for lower shots. My buddy figured out how to put a gun style trigger on his home made air launcher, which would make accuracy much easier. That's the big mod I wanna pursue first. I have no real issue with pumping by hand with a good quality, high volume pump, especially when I can ask a groundie to help with that.

This old thread has info on a really good trigger and valve for air cannons. It's a modified Rain Bird valve.

I've added an elbow so the blow gun trigger doesn't stick out so far.

It takes very little effort to squeeze the trigger, so there's no disturbing the aim.

Fuck yes!!! That's exactly what his looked like! I just didn't have time to pick his brain about it yet. Thank you x10000000000

I've started keeping a small pulley and 20' of strong cord in my throw kit. I'll be able to stand off to one side as I pull on the throwline to get a stuck bag out of a tree.

Using the Big Shot and working with a throw bag is still near the top of my list of risks associated with climbing. I won't make a shot if there's anyone within fifty feet.

I want you to know that I actually made this my new email, since I have been meaning to update mine. And this just stuck with me. It’s got such a ring to it. So now I’m obviousmoss at gmail. :bailando:
That's awesome it was available with no numbers or swapped characters! Congrats on spotting some original dopeness

I learned double bagging at the Ontario comp in 2016, and it changed my life :)
Do the additional weights that are clipped on rather than thrown need to be actual throwballs or could they be something cheaper and less durable, like a square of cloth and some shot with a string tied around it?

No. My second weight is a plastic bottle filled with two pounds of wadded up thin scrap copper wire to make it softer. At the top is a small loop formed by pushing a zip tie through the cap.. I attach it to the throwline by pushing a loop of throwline through the zip tie and then around the bottle. After pulling that up, I can flip it through the crotch or swing it around to get it over the crotch I want, let it down to the ground, then pull down the extra length of line backwards after removing the first weight.

You need to be careful to unwind any twist that might develop as the second weight comes down. It's also wise to untie any knot or loop at the end of the line to keep it from getting caught on something.

I've never used a second line, but may start doing that after watching the video. Many thanks for posting it.

more away from treework or as an impromptu tree service have used a mechanics rag with pebbles and dirt to deform easily as ball on paracord. Follows the theory well.
.
Throwline and bag easier to throw cleaner: higher and less frictions and catches, doesn't jam as easy.

Is using a line that is too short to reach back to the ground and tying something to the end of it (like another line and weight for double bagging) to keep it from disappearing up the tree going to cause a mess?

there is always a way to work it out, but make sure you stop the line from getting away from you. for $30, I would just get a longer line.

I have a 50 meter line which I think is slightly shorter than average, but I am not seeing many lines that are 200 feet or longer other than 1000 foot spools. If the Big Shot really does 100 feet plus as advertised and if double or more line is needed are you cutting your own from the big spool?

I've been using and happy with Dynaglide (1.8mm) for quite a while, both Wesspur and Treestuff sell it in 200' lengths. And pretty often I'm making 80-90' shots with my BigShot to do base-ties on my 200' ropes.
