Munter hitch for lowering limbs

For anything small enough to use a munter I'd just throw some wraps on a limb.

Can’t do that with palms if taking the head...

I have exactly no experience with palm trees, how heavy are they on a scale of something like pine to oak (a language I understand)

id figure, a ring and small portawrap, or a wrap around the tree would be good enough, kinda hard to put wraps on limbs when the tree doesnt have limbs

If using groundys a portawrap works, but When doing solo the head will impact whatever you are using - when doing heads that weigh 180-250 lbs one doesn’t want long falls before it hits, and off centre belays systems have a very high chance of slipping around the trunk.

A munter has the lowest energy negative rigging as it’s so compact, and a steel biner isn’t going to get damaged.

I have many little tricks that ive only used once or twice, but saved my butt

such as running a bight of climb line thru my side D, and clipping an HMS carabiner thru it, and using that for added friction when rappelling, kinda hard to explain, but I think you get the idea, maybe its time I design an Arial friction device specific for what your talking about

small, light, mid line attachable, throw in ideas

I do some simple self wraps on the line from time to time. Light duty stuff, straight down rigs, add or remove wraps to change friction.

I'm going to toy around with the munter. Its a good one to be familiar with for sure.

Reckon it can be a pain in the ass to maneuver the piece to lay anywhere else but straight down, but interesting trick!

Yes can physically do it, but have had enough slings rotate around trunk when I tried it is no longer a method I will use

I think Buckingham or somebody makes a really small porta wrap. I saw it on the internet and thiught that it was interestingbut probably too big or heavy. Then my boss bought one recently but I haven't had the chance to use it yet though after seeing it in person I can't believe how small it is and would totally use it for stuff like this. I totally forgot he got that and this thread reminds me I should put that thing in the truck Tuesday when we go back to work.

I’ll sometimes use the munter on a tagline if it’s a biggish piece that may go for a swing. It’s not taking all the weight but it’s slowing it down. Also, more control being in the tree.

Anybody run munters on aluminum biners? I use munters now and then, but always on steel. I'll always have some steel biners with me, so no reason to use aluminum.

I rarely rig with a munter, steel or otherwise But I rapell from time to time on a munter and it's always aluminum.

Works great for light rigging. I often use when there are just a couple bigger limbs on a pruning job or maybe as a second line for drifting a piece over.

Our harnesses and saddles are for climbing and potentially belaying another climber. NOT for rigging. Sheesh!!!

I agree with your statement but the post you quoted isn't in reference to rigging. It's in reference to adding friction to descend on.

I'm not sure what it is that he was descending on that required additional friction, but I don't believe transferring part of the load (his bodyweight) is going to hurt the side dee or his harness.

The possible rope twisting supposedly is a factor of ANGLE. For abseiling, e.g., keep the rope hanging straight down, not holding it off to one's side.

The Munter can be doubled (one good turn deserves another).

I keep a RE totem on my belt with a web sling. I’m also in love with 3/8 stable braid. The totem which has a shitty name opens many doors for self lowering, it can be run like a fig8, a stitch plate, and many other configurations. I know it’s more than taboo to mix life support and rigging but this is one devise I make a calculated exception for. To the extent of having two of them. One for life support only and then the work horse for SRT redirects and light rigging when needed.
