Yea. It helps create a situation where it takes longer for the back of the undercut to close up, thus allowing the hinge to hang on longer. Honestly the main reason I use them is because they are so freakin' easy to cut.
 
That tall hinge doesn't concentrate the pressure at one point. I just did a dead maple on Tuesday, bad and bad for hinging, with a gap-face/ block-out or whatever.

Stump foresnics...it was evident that the flex was greater, along the tall hinge.

Blowing the block out, rather than bore-cutting the back, will break vertically along the fibers, not in a plane made by the chain.

Big double-cuts are way easier to make this way.
Bore vertically into the face and beat a wedge in, forcing sideways on both halves, might have to stack wedges, depending. One side of the facecut will give, then you have a flat side to beat against, with wedges either above or below to add strain, but not enough to pinch the face-cut chunk against the top or bottom of the gap.
Add a snipe dead on, or off to the side, for different effects.
 
Up one of my favourite trees late this afternoon on BLM land on the South end of the island I live on. The view is to the Southwest across the Strait of Juan de Fuca towards Port Angeles, WA, and the Olympic Mountains. The mountains themselves were unfortunately obscured by the distant haze and clouds but are quite spectacular on a clear day.

Fun little reduction prune on this Norway maple. Client was considering removing it but was a little heartbroken with the idea of losing it.
