So as I ponder chippers you guys and gals get to answer all my annoying questions

So has anyone dealt with these guys? They always seem to have stuff for sale. I'm not there yet but I am trying to narrow down who, what and when. Thanks.

Frank A&A is a front or what ever you want to call it for Ricks tree service. They sell a lot of equipment from the tree side. They have had a few nice pieces I've wanted to look at but I haven't been down. As with any used equipment dealers you gotta look the equipment over with a fine tooth comb. They have had a nice morbark 12" for sale for a while now, but it's a little over priced.
 
Thanks Mert, I know there are a few dealers that were mentioned to stay away from in other threads. When I get to the point of dropping some cash on a used chipper I will certainly be taken you to lunch. Now there might be a chance we pass by that said chipper, lol.
 
I can only "lose" so much money as a startup business so after the New Year I am goingto start looking hard at chippers I believe. I am thinking about a budget range of 8-12k. What are brands and models I should belooking at or staying away from. I want feed rollers, 10-12" capacity, towable with an F350 (9,300lb curb weight). Thanks.

Morbark or bandit, try for drum but disk is ok. When you come by for Christmas dinner I'll show you one in the mid west that looks really nice. Lol

Not really. There is a morbark dealer in west chester, Bandit is in Bristol. But I do all of my maintenance when needed. I'm pretty good with a wrench and youtube :)
And Ive got a few people I turn to if I get something I cant handle on my own
 
I have a woodchuck wc12 with a 4 cylinder John deer diesel that will be for sale soon. Sounds like the perfect machine for you. Light weight with plenty of balls and an bullet proof motor. Haven't had any issues with it in the 2 years I've owned it. I need to upgrade as my business grows from a small climbing crew to a larger more mechanized crew. I haven't posted it for sale anywhere yet but I'm thinking in the spring it'll go. If your interested it can go sooner. Let me know if you are interested.
 
This is an interesting thread/study in leadership. It's all over the map.

Seems to me that if you wrote out a list of the things you want a chipper to do for you and then put that out to the membership in the form of a question you could get some focused direction. (Probably wouldn't hurt to acknowledge that anybody taking the time to answer has some real value to you too.)
 
So I am thinking this is a little over priced although it is a clean looking machine. Am I correct or is about where it should be?

1994 Brush Bandit 200 XP Chipper. Original owner, runs good, well maintained. Has hydraulic winch, electric brakes, and newer tool boxes. 5,920 hours. $9850
 
Looked at a few down at Rick's today Mert. They do have a lot off stuff, seems the prices can be negotiated a little if you find something before they give the spit shine and such. Looked at a nice 1590 w/ winch, sensi feed, & the hydraulic crotch crusher. No price yet, it just got the yesterday and has not been gone over mechanically yet.

Wow 1590 is a long way from that 10-12" you were looking for! Those are a lot of machine. One of the reasons I went with the 1390 behind my 550. That's cool you stopped down, I would love to go look around but the CFO says I spent enough this year.
You could probably get a pretty good deal if you could get into a machine before they get into making a plan for it (paint, deferred maintenance etc). Might cost a bit in repairs and down time but if you save enough it might be worth it.
 
1590 is a big machine, nice.

Just following this thread out of curiosity (as I do many outside my rec interests). Seems the general sentiment is go bigger than needed and reap the efficiency and larger job opportunities. Having hung out by a chipper for a short time a few times, I'd want that thing done its job fast! Loud as heck they are, can't be good for anyone.
 
1590 is overkill for me but it never hurts to drool. Right now I'm just looking at what's out there and thinking about what makes sense. Living in a twin means I also have to figure out where I am putting anything I buy. 2 cars, 1 truck, 1 cargo trailer and a 20ft boat has me jammed up force space.
 
Found an older 90xp for 7k but for 3k more I think the 200 w/winch above is a better overall deal. Still need to go give that one a serious looking over. Owner says they still use it occasionally to keep it all moving as it should. They just have a few new chippers and would like the yard space it's taking up back.

Is @10k close or is that way high? I need to get a feel of how low I can offer and at what point I should just walk away.

I think getting a reliable chipper with a winch for around 10K is a pretty good deal. The winch will speed up productivity and help you recoup that investment in the machine faster.
You just have to decide if it will be reliable. It is used and with all used equipment their will be "some" things that will need to be fixed as you start to use it.
I would try and get it as low as you can. Maybe start an offer at 8800 and see if they budge. But if it checks out and everything works then I would not be afraid to spend 10K on it. If you work three days a week year round, this chipper will cost you 64 dollars a day to pay back the 10K. Not too shabby considering most of your work is probably above 500 a day.
