ZigZag Issue Again...

Looking for unicender + rust in google and i come back here ^^

As far as rust.....Stainless steel does rust, it still contains iron. Although that thing looks like it has been beat to hell. The scratches on the side and the rivets don't t look like they came from a month in the trees. Maybe the trees were petrified, what do I know.

IMHO it is not rust. I have the Zigzag since the same day i had the Hitch Hiker, they saw the exact same weather, been used with same (good) care and i don't have absolutly no trace of rust one the Zigzag, wich is quite not the same thing with the Hiker. And i never saw any pict of a rusted Zigzag.

But i saw several pictures of that failure. Several Zigzags and allways the same breack at the exact same spot. That happened to people using not that often the Z and others using it every day since monthes don't have any trouble. So it looks to me like a conjunction of 2 factors : a bad distribution of strengh because of the design plus a random weackness of the alloy.

That's only a theory of course.

I noticed the crack on mine today. I've used it every climb since around April. I check it often, maybe not as often as I should've, but I definitely checked it last week.

Earlier in this thread, Monkeylove said he would like to see what kind of rope and carabiners was used when a failure (crack) occurred. This is what I use, DMM ovals and PI (Luna) rope with a tight eye. I'm an experienced climber, take my word for it, I never did any crazy drops on it, and always made sure a limb wouldn't side load the links.

Thanks Reilman. 11.7 DB Luna not fuzzed up bad at all. I am trying to figure ouf if it is the smaller ropes, or the DB'S or what it is. I only use Vortex for everything. So far so good.

Thanks Mark. I sent them a message on their professional site this morning. I'm waiting on that response. I've seen your work, I think you are a top notch climber.

Seems pretty obvious to me, they all cracked in the same place as mine. The integrity of the plate is compromised more with that small side hole (accomodates spring set up) unlike any of the other plates. DSCF1397.webp DSCF1399.webp

Like I said before (and was ignored on another thread), I am surprised to see Vortex ran. It is next to impossible to thread and after the line "fluffs up" a little with abrasion...seems all the way to impossible would be the case. Maybe you get it on and just leave it on. I use mine with multiple lines (3 lengths), but I have 2 ZZ's. I run velocity. I take the unit off for storage daily too. Vortex pictured. See bulge.

I am not really curious with what materials you climb. I am curious what kind of climbing system you work on. Is your rope going up from the ZZ through a friction saver back to the ZZ?

Treespotter, are you thinking without a friction saver there is a better chance of the rope snagging and making it act more like an SRT climb for a few moments?

I can't see that ever happening. I think he was wondering what kinda jacked up way I was rigged. I was within manufacturers guidelines.

No no, the "friction saver" was not mentioned as a tool, just as a direction where the rope goes. I also could have said "(false)crotch in the top of the tree".
I was hoping that you would have said, SRT with the aid of a Rope Wrench.
The way you use it is the way I use it. The only difference is that mine is home made modified with DMM Hitchclimber sideplates in stead of the yellow Petzle ones and my climbing rope is the Yale Sunburst.

Hey I have to ask ,,,I have had one since April to, are you getting it hot repeatedly.
Personally it just seems to be the weakest link obviously re heating burning out then sudden stops
