XT?

Who is they? Your hydro inspectors or is it the actual MOL? I didn't think the MOL had enough inspectors to actually enforce anything. It also might be some kind of a trick to get a nice clean melt on your technora based split tails.

You can't deviate in any way from the manufactured specs unless the item is sent back, retested and approved by the manufacturer.
Ministry Of Labour in Ontario.
It would surface in the case of an accident for sure, I don't know that they do routine inspections.
I'm regulated by the Feds but from what I understand in the case of an accident MOL is involved and everyone is now responsible to some degree under Bill C-45.

Let's say there WAS an accident because you re-cut your technora split tail. Because you live in a normal world, there is no way the proper cutting of your rope could have contributed to the accident, yet the MOL, in their infinite wisdom notice that you have strayed from what the manufacturer provided.

Any attempts from them to conclude that it was the recutting of the technora friction hitch that caused the thousand pound log to fall through the roof would be halted when they asked ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about trees, tree climbing, rigging and roping.

Like I said, you guys need to smack someone around over there!

I don't find that dipping 'em lasts too long.

So how do you prefer to whip your ends? I thought the Plasti Dip would be easy; I like easy. But I'd also like to just do it once.

For my non-spliced friction hitches, I just tape with electric tape, then cut through the tape. Then if I'm feeling frisky, I'll melt the end.

Sometimes I will put a proper whipping on it...just for fun. You can't beat that option!

Or you could just melt it into a big glob. The Squirrell gave me that idea.

Yes, those tips work just fine, and they are more affordable than the specialized rope cutters they sell, provided you already have a soldering iron.

Needle and whipping twine, either from the manufacturer or Nick. I guess I could do it myself if needed.

The big secret to whipping is it's easy. I prefer a "West Country" whipping (on my ropes of course /forum/images/graemlins/ooo.gif). There's really nothing too it, should take 10 mins if it's your first time. I think there's a illustration of it in the new Sherrill's catalog. If not, I'm sure you can find an illustration on the web (after filtering out all the porn sites from "whipping.")

Whipping the ends makes 'em look good, can make knots easier to tie and untie, and not everybody does it. And besides, it gives you something to do on those rainy days when you can't climb.

Cheers,
BAB

Blow torch and an old blade works for me.

I've done this using a cigarette lighter on cheap utility rope. Will XTC or Sta-Set require a hotter flame, i.e. will I need a torch?

Ya know what? It was raining earlier today and that was EXACTLY what I was doing! Sitting in my living room whipping some new prusiks I made up /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
