wrenching with a zig zag?

Unless your on the back end of R&D never by the first of anything.

I agree with Tony on why gear is pushed in ways the manufactures haven't envisaged (excellent blog BTW). Yet I will add that mainstream manufactures are usually conservative in what they do to a degree (seems especially with SRT). Not many will be on the "cutting edge" per say. If Petzl wanted to get in on the ground floor off SRT then obviously an avenue exists gauging by the interest in a ZZ/RW combo. Petzl could R&D and build a self contained mechanical hitch with a friction application incorporated yet haven't to date. My guess is we will continue to see individuals like Kevin, Paul and others bringing ideas and thoughts from the canopy to paper then to tools available to us. Companies like Petzl may get on board one day but only after the systems are developed and hard road has been traveled.
My 2c.

Petzl wont endorse the use of the RW as they have the RIG which is the system they advise to use SRT in trees.

My understanding was a rig is more so for descent in industrial rope access and needs a RAD type system employed to ascend any distance. Not quite the same efficiency as using a RW/HH 121 I would have thought.

Rig doesn't run very smoothly in up-and-down, working type scenario. It isn't smooth or easy to tend slack without the rads setup. IMO the hitch hiker is a much better option, and although I've never used a rw myself, from what I've seen, it's a no-brainer: head and shoulders above the rig for this type of use.

I think the RIG can be very effective but it's very different from other arb tools and requires a lot of initial practice. Some climbers, see ITCC champion Jared Abrojena, can make it look so smooth.

It was Jared who told me first about the zz/rw combo. I can't say if that is what he climbs on but he was stoked about it at the time.

It looks really snaggy, that handle, if you got it wedged somehow it would be an express elevator to hell. I remember a vague reference to a rig related accident a few months ago. Farfield was that you? Posting in another accident related thread maybe? Handle got stuck or somethin'. If that was you, care to share any details?

I tracked that post down, not related to the handle at all. Sorry that happened, you doin' alright? It's a good cautionary tale though, wouldn't hurt to share it again.
