Would YOU condemn this tree?

frans, looks like a Ganoderma bracket of some kind, is it solid with annual increments?

This type of fungi can cause stem and root failure, I have seen a few trees with snapped stems with this fungi.

Re removal - really depends on situation of tree and potential targets if stem or roots fail.

How tall is the tree? is it liable to windthrow or is it short and growing in a sheltered area?

If you stick your nail in the top of the bracket does it leave an indentation or is it rock solid?

[/ QUOTE ]Chop out the conk and probe the trunk to measure decay. Until you assess decay you don't know enough to say.

NEVER DO THIS AS YOU MIGHT NOT GET THE JOB AND THE NEXT ARBORIST WILL NOT SEE THE FRUITING BODY!

JUST GO IN NEXT TO THE FRUITING BODY!!!!!!!!

Generally acacias are short lived and succumb to rot and fungi readily as they mature.

Also they get lots of dead wood and galls that look like dog chit all over the canopy ... a good sign they're on the way out.

Be careful when generalizing about plants Ekka. There are hundreds of acacia species and some of them live very long lives and do not display the excessive deadwood, galls, and dogshit that apparently plague yours over in Brisbane.

Don't cut off the fruiting body because you ar eremoving a warning sign for the next potential climber? With G applanatum it's real hard to break off without leaving a sign. If that's a real concern, then some other sign can be put in its place. I can't see the wisdom of allowing billions of spores to be pumped into the air when it is so easy to cut off and bury the sporophores.

Hey Axe, were there any other questions on the Meripilus thread? Lost ya there.

Axe Knot what your trees can do for you. Axe what you can do for your trees.

Q: OJ, is Nicole going out with other guys?

OJ: I don't know; I'll Axe my wife.

Leon, I hope the ankle's better.

I thought you were in the Libertarian Party!

Its ok for you to have all the freedom in the world, and move around undisturbed, but when it comes to a bunch of wholly innocent fungal spores your like all the rest of those conservative liberals with fascist leanings!

Take charge and take over the tree for Christ's sake. You're an arborist and you're there, on it. If your hands are getting dirty, you've told them the options and your capabilities are such you can determine the threat and resolve it (one way or another), ID the pathogen, calculate the potential resolve and finish it.

Exercise the Arborist/Client priviledge. That or write a detailed report and highlight the non-binding responsibility of here on out.

Guy, thanks for the concern about the ankle. I started climbing again yesterday (carefully!) and if feels great to be back in the trees.

OK Rumi, you cosmic caretaker you!

In the revised tale (I'll send it), you sprained it tripping on a banyan root. I'm sure the real story is better than that tho...
