working with, your boss's perspectives

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

pompous and Napoleonic huh?

LOL realy!!!

That's hilarious... he's just a "guy" with ideas a few years ahead of the industry...only reason he comes off as pompous and Napoleonic is because he's talking to people that act ridiculous and moronic... its gottra get old, but he keeps doing his best to shed a little light on the ignorant masses.. who under their breath whisper "crucify him"...

this industry has its head up its AZZ.. I'd tell you why but I promised not to!

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

Maui, it sounds like your boss was not Napoleonic enough!

Job orders are 'shall's, which might look militaristic at first, but imo confidence and certainty are needed.

re 'new', read Shigo and Harris, I'm all about old style tree-centric pruning. Rules of thumb are easily broken.

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

My take from Guy is that he wants to stimulate a discussion and goes to the extreme to promote putting some extra thought into tree care techniques. I try to keep the environmental and financial(same thing) costs of that care responsible for a counterpoint.

When the cost of care for ten street trees exceeds the cost to preserve ten acres of forest you can't call it a ecological win. It becomes just another industry grinding out a product. Which is fine except it's being sold as such a ecological triumph of the human community to have a massive oak in front of city hall that in reality is on life support.

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

Guy, I should have just said "condescending". I was at the end of a tough day (as we always are) and I was cranky. I want to apologize for that.

Daniel, maybe you two should get a room.

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

A little more thought is needed in tree care techniques, if planned tree care over time is considered 'life support'. Hard to know what that means, but it need not cost extra money--maybe less!

It took 6 hours to prune that post oak, and it won't need any more pruning for 5 years, if then. compare that to the $X,XXX removal cost and the $XX,XXX cost of losing the asset if the removalists had their way. Do the math--What costs are you talking about? 10 acres whhaaa?

TL, I'd prefer Napoleonic, thanks, but a little more thought is needed in tree care decisions.

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

there are alot of bosses that just focus on the here and now when they need to tell thier climbers and clients the long term image for the tree. communication communication communication….

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

boreality, it is our focus to preserve trees in the urban environment. That is why the differentiation between arborists and foresters.

Become a forest conservationist if that is where you feel you'll have greatest impact. It's a different ecological battle than that of what is fought in the urban canopy.

Re: working with, your boss\'s perspectives

There are bosses and then there are leaders. It's great all around if you get a boss that happens to be a leader. It's happened to me maybe twice in my life.

Putting numbers on things is really important, not only for the crew but also the homeowner to avoid those very meltdowns you guys mentioned.

I make sure the customer agrees on what the goals are with at least some numbers and I try to explain what the tree will look like when it's done. Sometimes the tree will look much like it started out and sometimes it will look quite different. I like to make sure there are no surprises either way.
