workers comp !!

Hey Shovelhead, I work with a number of arborist across the country helping them reduce comp rates. In fact, I'm been getting great rates quoted (17%)in TN right now. Give me a call 1-888-582-8388.

I have bitched and complained about work comp the last couple years, but when Kristian fell last year, it was and still is the only way I can sleep at night. I have no idea how I could have handled Kristian's injuries and time off (9 months and counting now) without the comp policy I begrudgingly paid. I suspect it may have been enough to put me out of business, or starting completely over from scratch. Now I just do whatever I can to make sure I am getting the best rate possible by doing WHATEVER they ask me to do, or document, or put in my company policy, etc.

What employee? Oh, I forgot...you have 1099 subs. You better hope the IRS doesn't catch on to you paying people contract labor...unless they are 100% bona-fide, legititmate subcontractors. Field audit can be brutal! We had a guy around here that was doing the same thing...issuing 1099's at the end of the year and he got his butt severely popped by the IRS...some of his "subs" even had their own insurance, and it still didn't matter.

Holy- not sure you are talking about me, but if you are, I only have one company I subcontract for stump work. All my employees are full-time and fully reported, I have no fears with the IRS. Was that comment for someone else?

No, man...read all your posts. Just saying...had the same thing happen to a guy around here. Whatever works for you..I'm sure you've got it all under control, crossing all your "T's" and dotting your "I's," you feel? Contract labor can open up a floodgate for the IRS, when they start digging around...but, as long as everything is on the "up and up," more power to you...and best wishes for continued successes with your company!

FYI, it wouldn't matter how much money I paid to w/c, I cannot be covered, since I own the company. Pretty fooked, eh?

You might want to check with your agent on that one. If you are the owner of your company, that also means that you're an officer of the company and officers can get workers comp if they go onto jobs as a sub.

Only its extremely expensive.
