Had a good work day today, all solo on my home island compared to my usual commute. No cleanup jobs, just get it down and leave. Started by taking down a dying grand fir surrounded in calm waters, then a 120' rotting big leaf maple while tied into a neighboring tree, then some hangers in the bucket for my friends.

(this summer I'll get the box painted on that truck )

I've been climbing several times a week to keep in shape, but I was able to remove a few dead limbs on some of them.

This water oak planted by the homeowner in 1989. It has a wide canopy with no central leader. I had to redirect once but, had to move my TIP and climb 3x to get the long branches over the 2 story roof. Walking up some of the branches at a steep angle tough. It was a pretty tiring day.

Not today but last week. Total slap in the forehead on this copper beech. Why wouldn’t the grafted and adventitious roots be different colors? Made for a lot of ‘well huh, I guess this one was root stock, guess not.’

Yes my client has a yard full of cherry all burled up
This one was not green so she opted for removal , but some have gnarley burls and are all growing for future harvest

I used a line in this big pine to remove some dead limbs and suckers from the small oak nearby.

I couldn't let that high TIP go to waste, so up I went.

That’s a big’n. A couple of things that I’ve learned about Water Oaks is they can’t handle pruning back to laterals very well (sapwood rot infects the cuts). And the bark has the same effect of a cheese grater on your skin.

I thought the removal of this loose hanging dead limb and unwanted live limb would be something I could do from the ground. Thankfully, underbidding isn't a problem.

I was able to pull half the dead limb down, but the rest got hung up, and I couldn't reach the base of the live limb with the pole saw. Since I could see other stuff to remove, I cleaned up both trees and gathered up a good pile for the pickup crew.

Hackberry over 5ft on the stump. MS460 with 25” bar. Had to cut flairs off. My tiny helmet on top.

Similar to pin oaks in that respect to trimming back to laterals?

And the shredder effect of bark and slappy branches when you take them to the chipper haha
