Treena, Treeish, Kathy and all women climbers,

We have quite a few female climbers in Ohio and several that compete. We would welcome all of you to come compete next summer in the Ohio Chapter TCC. It would be a great way to get some experience in competing and I am certain we will have at least 3 women from Ohio competing with you. Wouldn't be a bad tune up for Hawaii for Kathy either. Typically we hold the TCC around the second week in June. This year the comp will be held in the Cleveland area so all of you will have places to stay if you decide to come out. Hope to see you all there.

Last May Charlie Wagner and I gave a climbing workshop for the Rocky Mountain Chapter.

I know the attendance was very good. The workshop Charlie and I gave had two points of focus. One focus was on basic climbing techniques and competition basics, taught by Melissa; Charlie focused on advanced climbing skills.

We received great feedback and I know many past champions would love to give more of these workshops to Chapters willing to support them!

The flyer RMC used is attached.

The more we educate the more the path will be opened for newbies to give it a try!

Cheers,
Melissa

I compete for the Ontario chapter and on average we seem to have the five allowed spots filled every year.

Why are the spots limited for the women?

Is this a first come, or flip the coin thing?

We can't get one woman to show up, but I would make sure, if 5, 10 or even 15 women showed up they would all climb.

The powers in Ontario claim they can only get through 30 competitors in a Saturday. So they have alloted 5 spots for women, and if they don't get filled, they top it up with male competitors. I'd like to see more women competing in Ontario, we need women in this industry, I have an 'old school' uncle in the trade who can wrap his head around women tree climbers. Kind of funny to watch the arogance, closed mindedness, and machismo, evacuate from his mouth.

Yes they are, women are given five of the thirty available spots for competition, I believe it is done on a first come first serve basis. I'm curious now, are there not captions for women in other provinces or states? I know that many have problems getting women to turn out period but I definately think that if there were more spots available in Ontario we would have more female competitors.

Thanks Rich and Norm, sounds like an excellent chance to meet some more women climbers and to promote women in competion at the same time, please, keep me posted as well as to dates and locations. Cheers!

boy, if i lived in that chapter, i'd sure be lobbying for more than 1/6th of the quota...wenda? lurking out there by any chance? if there are more than 5 women in your chapter as there were this year they should, IMO, have been allowed to compete. we may never reach 50/50 in the industry but we sure as heck won't if there are "no rooms at the inn".

grumble.

Welcome to the new age premadona's, women can climb too!
Go fig
Had a arborist come up to me during the last OTCC competion and thank me for my support in her choice of being a woman arborist. I actually did not remember the conversation as we did not know each other at that time. She saw my crew and I workin and came up and started talking to us about her yearning to be a arborist. She had been talked down to by several macho male climbers and I took the time to tell her to go for it and forget them. Nice to hear as she remembered me years later and I thank her for that as I have become slightly jaded about my impact and the state of our industry. Not tootin my horn brothers but you just never know who you are effecting by your talk and your walk.
Treeish you go get it girl I know you got it! :}

If anyone wants that registration form email me and I'll send it to you.

Cheers,
Melissa

Re: Climbing Workshop Registration Form

Sounds like a great idea to help inspire new climbers! We have had little success with getting women climbers to try it. I feel like it will be huge if we can just get a few to start coming out.

Keep pushing Melissa!

Re: Climbing Workshop Registration Form

Does anyone know of training opportunities in Missouri for a woman who would like to improve her climbing skills?

Thanks,

Re: Climbing Workshop Registration Form

Hi Ann,

I'm not sure about scheduled classes or anything, but Noel
Boyer works out of Springfield (A and A Tree Service)and as well as being an all around terrific guy he is an excellent climber. Maybe you could give him a try.
