Winter gloves

It's -20c here and a pile of snow is coming (I wish I was making that up). So I set up a new glove system.

For extreme cold I'm trying horsehide outer work mitt $19. No trigger finger just a mitt. Then thick wool mitt liner $10 and roper glove liner $1.49.

No goretex or cordura but the warmest, best wearing, system available. At those prices you can buy 10+ sets and always have a dry set.

You could go bare handed in the outer on warm days or any combo.

Then I have horsehide work gloves $11 for the warmer days. Apparently horse is better with moisture than cow. We'll see first pair for me.

Hey, you know how the channel and cold water swimmers get all greased up with petroleum jelly?
Well it works to keep them warm with a layer between the skin and the cold. Or like a skin suit with water in it.
For the last few years I have kept a jar of Bag Balm in the door pocket of the truck and before the day starts the hands get a good greasing.
It really works well to keep the hands warm as well as not drying out and to keeep the sting out of any cracks or to keep them growing.
Its meant for teets and utters and can be found at any good country store like TSC.
Just carefull not to ingest any because you won't be able to run fast enough to the toilet.

Oh it is in green tin about 3" square.
and if you put it on before resinous tree removals it acts like an invisible glove so the resin comes off more easily.
I find the poly glove liners work really well. Its like long johns for for your fingers.

Winter climbin is my favorite.
It is the most alive I ever feel especially with the snow fallin and the wind blowin.
Find it really funny that people are tucked up safe and warm in the house and there you are in the complete opposite.
Handling green woood is so darn cold compared to dead wood. Eh!
Who makes Horse hide gloves?

There's no brand name on the gloves. We have the ultimate work wear/western store in town. They had moose work mitts as well $35. Too good for work I thought.

The leather outer mitt/wool liner is mostly what I'm recommending. I've had a pair around since I was a kid and haven't ever frozen a finger except when I didn't have my mitts. It's a serious injury and is often permanent damage.

For those new to winter work the adavtage with a big work mitt is they can be on and off quickly and the fingers keep each other warm. The friction hitch, lanyard snap, and saw can be operated while wearing mitts. It's not as good as bare handed but no frozen fingers.

The ones gramma used to knit were the best.

And yes there's nothing like winter tree climbing. It feels like summitting a mountain sometimes.

TJ Max is a good source of gloves at a reasonable price for high quality.

Made my annual pilgrimage last night for a 30 degree all day td tomorrow. Gonna change and try a pair of nfl receiver gloves when it warms up.

It's pretty sad when we resort to wearing mitts, but I do too. Ever since I frostbit my fingertips a few years ago. Takes a while to warm them up every day.

It's going to be -20 deg here tomorrow and snowing. (that's -4 in American).

You can wear mitts climbing? Not me. I invest in a 20 dollar pair of Watson Stealth lined grippy gloves. I save them just for climbing and they last most of the winter.

I'm going to try that Bag balm trick. Thanks.

F that! Especially this early!

Oh well Ropeshield, if you can't get ahold of a teet, next best thing is some lotion for teets and utters I guess.

But seriously, first I heard this, so I'll try some. :)

November to December Is tough for me.
i think cuz the humidity makes me feel colder. By January I am fully hardened up.
Works on chapped bags as well.
For all ya commandos.
