Winter climbing

Ok, so here is what I got....I, along with my roomate and good buddy Adam did a bit of climbing a couple days ago. We spent about 4 or 5 hours climbing a pretty big Cotton Wood on our property. (photos will be added shortly) This was the first time I had ever really done winter climbing and everything went great for the first few hours. However, the weather having gotten progressivly warmer had melted snow into puddles and just wet snow. Our climbing lines were getting wet and although we all used the grippy gloves, the rope would still slip through our hands on occasion.
Does anybody with winter climbing experiencce have any suggestions or techniques to deal or manage with wet ropes? I'm open for anything.

grip gloves are slippery when wet, like the bottoms of your shoes. Build some callous tissue /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A serious response:

While ascending and usually while working you can attach a handled ascender to your climbing line above or below your friction hitch (depending on how you set up your system) and instead of pulling the rope, pull the ascender. You'll have to remove the ascender for descending.

This slows the process down a bit as you have you keep taking the ascender on and off, but it is assumed that winter climbing is a bit slower. We know it's easier to climb trees on a nice warm slightly breezy day. Your business will be better off if you've figured out how to stay open all year long.

Thanks for the advice, now where is that ascender at hmmmmm. SSA anyone. Actually saturday was alot of fun, maybe we could go again this saturday on campus, you guys interested, maybe we could bust out the ascenders, speaking of which who has keys for 320.

The first thing my girlfriend told me was that I have rough hands. Oh well.

Nick, that ascender idea might be the trick. I'll give it a try as soon as I get my hands on one. Thanks

I suppose you want to get into the equipment lounge, don't you?

Not sure why I called it a lounge, just thought it should be a place with a pool table, smokey air, and fresh brew on tap instead of just a room to hang rope. /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That is ok. There are actually a few women out there who like their men to be manly.

The tarp was our initial plan...we had actually set one up to stage our gear while we got the throw line where we wanted it. The damn tarp seemd to have a mind of its own and managed to turn itself into the perfect mess. All the up and down the tree (no groundsman to clear brush so we had to do it) made the rope coil at the base of the tree in the snow.

This is a rub wound caused by a 1" branch. There is a similar wound but about twice its size on the opposite side of the tree. It a shame that it took so long to get this tree pruned. The large wound is on a main trunk too. It will have to come down eventually.

HAHAHAHAHA This is Adam trying to figure out why his line and saver won't come out of the tree. Any guesses??? Thats right, he tied the know and pulled the line through the wrong end of the saver. HAHAHAHA What a dumbass. You're lucky that Andre still had his line in the tree man. You really know something humiliating just happened when you're trying to clean up and you just here someone mutter the infamouse "son of a bitch".

>I'm with you on that! If you gotta girlfriend and her skin is softer than your >calloused hands, you better be wearing gloves!

Nick, do you mean you need to wear gloves on rope or do you mean gloves while with the girlfriend?>
