Winch on grapple

In the past I used my grapple loader to drag logs using a chain/cable/rope hooked to the grapple head.

When I did that I didn't think it was hard on the grapple when I pulled with the boom in line with the load. when I would drag to the side I wondered though.

Some time ago I saw a grapple with a hydraulic winch mounted above the swivel end of the loader. That seemed really clever.

Has anyone done this?

Do you think that its damaging or stressing a grapple loader by dragging from the side?

We got one on on skid steer, a ryan's brand 12k warn winch, strong as hell, I don't think it's what you are talking about though, I think you are talking about a pretice loader kinda thing?

Applying load to the rotational gears is very damaging. Every loader manual Ive ever read does not recommend it.

TCIA tailgate safety manual also mentions this......I dont recal the session number, but its titled Log Loaders and Tree Cranes. Just read it this morning

I talked with the service rep for Prentice Loaders about having a chain hook welded to one side of the grapple so that we can hook a chain to it for pulling. He said that was acceptable.
