Why I hate Acer platanoides

You know, in some places it's illegal to plant a Norway in the first place. Or any other invasive species, for that matter.

Personally, I'd try to sell the homeowner on a removal and replant of a native species.

Norways are invasive and develop a monoculture overgrowing anything native, with a few exceptions, and suppressing understory growth.

I chiseled a 5" diameter root that was girdling probably 40% of the trunk on a 12" Norway this past fall, actually curious to see what amount, if any dieback will be the result of it. Tree is pretty rough to begin with.

Personally, I actually think most varietys of red maple are worse as far as girdling roots go.......
