Why do we use ropes like p-ivy?

I've been using poison hivee for about a year now and i still find it a pain to hold because its so small (11.7) I still find xtc so much easyer to grab. i like the splice in it but XTC and safety blue are splicable aswell.
And i wonder if there will be hand related problems spring up in the future due to the extra effort requied in the hand department.
Yes it runs through ascenders better than thick rope but i have and access line for that kind of thing.

I climb on Velocity a lot lately, but if PMI 10mm wouldn't form knots under the cover, that's all I'd climb on. I don't mind the smaller size and the rope is significantly lighter than arborist rope, but it won't do a Blakes hitch. It works fine with a 8mm Bee-Line split tail set up.

But, alas, every PMI rope I've ever owned, 11mm EzBend, 11mm MaxWear, two 10mm EzBends, and a 9mm Ezbend all have formed lumps or knots under the cover, and that's the only reason I don't use EzBend for anything any more.

I agree with you on the hand fatigue probs in useing these size lines. I used to suffer with cramp in my hands after a real harsh climb (lots of rep up down wrk) but since I began to use thin grip gloves I have found that prob has gone away.
Has been a prop mission to get hold of gloves that do the job at the right price (as I can get through a pair a day to 3 days dependant on the climbs I have to do) The thicker sticky gloves only seem to last a few hrs at most! The lines though with their dia and low elongation are fantastic. I cant see myself going back to 13mm. Also dose anyone know where in the uk I can get hold of PI rope without massive shiping costs?

I us PI because I prefer it. I know plenty of climbers who don't like the smaller diameter ropes. It's good to have options.

agree PI is my preferred choice

To take advantage of many of the efficient rope tools developed for other rope disciplines smaller ropes are needed. Making the shift to mechanical rope tools is easy now. Before New England Ropes developed Fly there weren't any arbo ropes that would work properly with rope tools.

Weight and volume differences are significant too. Pulling long tails of rope up and over limbs is much easier with the small diameter ropes.

Shut up jesse.

I use smaller diam. Lines because they are MUCH easier to haul around the tree and stuff into a sack. I use a 50ft tachyon lanyard that I stuffed into a hip pouch (much cooler than a fanny pack mind you).

I find that the 3$ gloves are nice in the winter but I don't wear gloves otherwise. Try using your pantin/foot ascender for so that your hands aren't always doing all of the work, or you could use a hand ascender that isn't connected to your saddle to help with ascent (I never connect my handled ascenders when climbing drt, too much crap in the way)

I actually prefer my velocity line over my bluemoon because of it's tackyness, it is a little stretchy though.

I use Ironclad brand "Box Handler" gloves. They are form-fitted to the hand, have a strong velcro strap at the wrist and full silicon palm and finger grip surfaces. Plus a nice soft-cloth patch on the back of the thumb for wiping perspiration on those hot days. They do wear out rather quickly (about ten days of trees) but they are less likely to move around than the knitted/dipped gloves. In my experience the thinner ropes (60' Blaze lanyard -thank you Nick) feels as easy to haul on as Poison Hi-Vee, though still a bit less 'hand feel' than the XTC Fire.
