who's studying for the BCMA?

who\'s studying for the BCMA?

I'm putting this on the WOTT thread to see how many women are considering this career path. If there are a bunch of us, maybe we could come up with some sort of online BCMA study group (great idea, huh Sylvia?). Maybe we could have a study group in the Main Buzz with the fellahs? I thought I'd start here. Whaddya all think?

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

Great idea, Tchukki!! (I've got your back!)

Seriously, anyone who is studying for the BCMA, and I guess anyone who is studying in general for that matter, can join this thread. We were thinking of starting topics of discussion and seeing where it leads us.

Is there a particular sticky point that you don't understand or would like to kick around a bit.

Or post a picture and let us take a shot at diagnosis or ID. (I need a LOT of work on that kind of stuff.)

Interested parties please speak out! (This would kind of be like a homeowners forum without worrying about subjecting the homeowner to incorrect information or getting lambasted by someone else for guessing wrong. - Ok, some might chuckle a bit...)

Once I meet the qualification I'm taking it but I'll luke the thread like I always do and add when I'm pretty sure I won't sound like a green horn.

I'll ...add when I'm pretty sure I won't sound like a green horn.

[/ QUOTE ]If we all waited until then, the world would be very quiet. "Be bold--take chances!" (from the movie Julia).

When you are corrected, just take it as a favor and not as an attack. Ignore any emotional content that you perceive--it's easy to read more into it than there is.

And don't stop contributing--when I took the first bcma test in 2004, I took 3 pages of notes questioning the questions. These comments were well received--the people writing the tests are just people, and open to learning from feedback.

This is exactly why we wanted to start something like this. So those of us studying or just trying to learn more can sample our knowledge without feeling like we are subjecting the unsuspecting public to possibly incorrect answers. I go on these forums and look for situations that I can contribute to but I try not to get in over my head, which limits what I contribute to.

Also, sometimes there are questions that may arise as a byproduct of the initial question but may be "off topic". So having a thread that can "go any where" may allow those interesting side issues.

I don't have time to go on all the threads to see where there might be pertinent topics. So we thought we could consolidate an informational research thread, if you will.

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

If a thread starts to go off-topic anyone is welcome to moderate the thread and nicely suggest that off-topic conversations be in a new thread.

If you folks want to start a specific thread on any subject and would like to have it made 'Sticky' so that it stays at the top of any of the forums let me know. If there is any thread editing that needs to be done any of the Mods can do that too.

there's nothing wrong with running a thread by having an iron fist in a velvet glove.

The thing that sets TREE BUZZ apart from other arborist boards is the you can ask questions without being ridiculed for not knowing the answer. (It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

The fear of being ridiculed is what keeps many of us from posting, so it is nice to have a forum where that is kept to a minimum. I don't mind having misinformation pointed out or clarification of issues. In fact that is why I am on these forums.

I think what I might sample is starting a thread in the General Discussion posing a hypothetical scenario or question and letting people give their feedback and input.

We (my study budy and I) were hoping to generate input and participation from others either studying for their test or simply wanting to increase their knowledge.

I find that I need to not only read the material but also need to try to apply it in "life". Interpreting pictures, speculating through descriptions of problems, etc.

Ok so I'm going to put the TB to a test and just ask you guys: What is the BCMA?

Go ahead and ridicule me if you like.

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

BCMA - Board Certified Master Arborist

Which is the top goal (at least at this time) for certification through the ISA (International Society of Arboriculture).

Something I set my sights on after building up the courage to sit for the Certified Arborist exam and passing it, on the first sitting, with a 93%. I'm not saying that to brag because I walked out of that exam and called the next site to see when I could register for the retake. I had no idea whether or not I did well. But it spurred a thirst for knowing more...

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

Rock on Sylvia!! That's awesome you passed with flying colors. I made it on the first try too, but just barely.

I do admit though, that when asked by guys that took several takes if I passed on the 1st time, I gladly tell them.

And you know what...

...I AM BRAGGING and IT FEELS GOOD!!!!

Thanks for the info on the Master Arborist test. I forgot about this. I really need to set my goals to new heights, so you'll definitely see me participate in this study session thread.

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

Shameless promotion: After the women's ITCC Sunday morning, there will be a BCMA test prep workshop, 50 questions based on 7 real-life scenarios, led by Andreas Detter and 6 BCMA's. It will be near the men's master's challenge, so glimpses of that will be possible too, for the multitaskers.

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

OMG - I am so envious of all who are able to attend. I saw the "Det. Dendro and the Seven Scenarios" listed on the agenda. This is the BCMA prep of which you are speaking? Hopefully, this will be written up after the fact and let us stay-at-homes take part in some small way?

The workshop with the BCMAs would be an incrediblly helpful experience!

Sylvia

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

yes it is the dendro workshop. sorry you gotta stay at home. :(

I haven't written the ?'s yet. Depending on how much time I am able to volunteer on this thing (I'm way overinvested in it already), I may be able to save them, or maybe even put them on a cd with pictures so it is a mini-bcma type thingy.

I'm gonna try writing it based on the vid i shot in march, or failing that make a trip next week to see the trees in leaf and do it after that.

Re: who\'s studying for the BCMA?

Let me be the first to encourage you to do so (I love the CD idea) and praise your volunteer efforts. I know how difficult it is to work those efforts into an already busy life.
