who carries a knife into the tree?

Speaking as to the knife with marlinspike, the best I've found is the AG Russell SeaMaster. It's made for them by fox cutlery, but appears to be out of production at the moment. Barring that, I've been decently surprised by both Camilus' $35 marlin spike w blade as well as the "Fury Tactical Spike Folding Tool"

The Fury is kind of gimicky, as the spike has a fairly heavy curve compared to a "traditional" spike, and the locking action of the spike reverses to make a rudimentary pliers. I say rudimentary because there's only a small bit of gripping surface and then the jaws gap to some extent. However, the gap does seem to have a purpose, it's about the same size as the turn bolt on most clevises.

The fury does happen to be the right price to pick up a few and scatter em in toolboxes and glove compartments, $12.19 on the zon right now.

I said knives not swords...

Truth! 'If a little screwdriver can't pry it apart then nothin will!! Most of us have one in the kit somewhere. I carry ALL sizes/head types!! After discovering, (..by experience, ) "the only driver you need is the one you don't have".... No more!!

By the way, I prefer using cross heads to undo knots, though flatties may be more effective to pry a bound knot open, after one or two slips, and one or two divots in my palm, I now prefer to insist with a cross!

...never stop learning!.. Never stop adapting!!

I carried a locking blade for quite a few years, then came to the conclusion, that my handsaw will do anything that my knife would do, with another item not hanging from my saddle. So after using a Spatha, & Military Lock blade, it's limbing saw, strictly.

What is it that happens when someone quotes another forum member's post, but then no text of their own is added? I've seen it before; just wondering if we've got a technical glitch going on, or if they meant to do that?

What creates the speech bubble is the code in the [stuff in these brackets] as in [QU0TE="TimBr, post: 473145, member: 9161"] -
that [code at the beginning] signifies the opening of the quote...so, there needs to be an "end quote" at the...well, at the end of the quote.
This is done with a simple [/QU0TE]. (Notice I have changed the 'O' in 'QUOTE' to a zero so it won't change this example into a speech bubble.)

So if, when replying, the user clicks inside the [QU0TE] in here [/QU0TE] as in
it becomes part of the speech bubble and is hard to distinguish between the original message and the response. Sometimes you have to look carefully at the text in the bubble to find the reply.

The Reply that Kris Anderson added is hidden in the text of the bubble...look for the hidden "holy crap!" it gets confusing...:)

So, when replying the reply needs to be placed after the end quote CODE with the '/' as in [/QUOTE]

Now I have to preview this to make sure the code doesn't try to make speech bubbles show up with all of my triggers in there.:D

Also you can alway preview your post to see it with the speech bubbles and all if you click on 'More Options...' down in the right near the 'Post Reply' button. This will take you to a screen that now has a button that allows you to 'Preview...' your message.
The other thing you can do is delete everything else and leave only the part of the message you are wanting to highlight and respond to. Just make sure the 'Quote' has the special code at the begining and ending of the text you are replying to... and that your reply is after the final [/QUOTE]

I always carry a serrated blade knife. I've never cut myself loose from a climbing screwup but the possibility is there. I've had to climb to get a "bowline" that a new "experienced" groundie said he could tie and sent up into the tree only to realize as he loaded it that it was rolling out and was something other than the useful dependable bowline. I had thrown the rope out into the tips of a lateral and he was to pull it around as it was cut and then lower ot down. The test pull revealed the incorrect knot. I was pissed and scurried out, tried to untie with a Gerber multitool plier set and broke the jaw off one side which made my mood better of course so I cut the 3/4 line with my hand saw while hanging upside down. Wonderful experience! I went ahead and pieced the limb out while I was there but poor positioning tired me quite a bit. I always carry a quick opening serrated knife as well as a Leatherman multitool in a sheath now

John, thanks for taking the time to give such a thorough answer. I never even noticed that the response was contained within the quote itself. Now I know what to look for in the future when there seems to be a quote, but no response. Pretty subtle thing to look for. Thanks so much for all of your time and trouble in explaining this.

I carry a Mini Super Knife ALL the time, everywhere (except airplanes).
It is a mini folding box cutter, using very small utility blades.
I don't replace the blades. (I bought spare blades, but have NEVER replaced the original.)
It is extremely easy to sharpen on a flat stone, or flat diamond surface.
Using a very coarse stone will leave "tiny teeth" on the edge, i.e. mini serrated edge.
It cuts 99% of everything I need. (except in the kitchen !)
e.g. ropes, boxes, etc

Folded, it is less then 2" X 3/4".

I've had mine for 10+ years ?
Except airplanes.....love it lol

Certainly looks like the Fury is a knockoff of the Myerchin. Haven't held a Myerchin, so it's hard to say exactly. I like the aluminum scales better than the plastiwhatever used for the scales on the Fury, might have to order a Myerchin, for "testing" purposes(and to feed the blade collection, lol).

I previously posted above, but here's an update:

When I got the Myerchin, the overall quality looks good.
It was not quite as "grip friendly" as I had hoped.
However, I am extremely particular.
The back of the spine is ground flat, perpendicular to the overall blade. This makes a very sharp 90° edge along the spine.
I wanted a smoother surface for the base of my fore-finger to rest on when doing "fine cutting".
I used a very fine "Swiss pattern file" and several strips of "emery" cloth to "soften the edge".
(The spines on all my kitchen knives have been softened: German, Japan, Swiss, Chinese, etc.)

Both ends of the handle had slight "points" which I also softened.

The blade looks good, but I was surprised to find the tips of the 3/4 serrated portion are "round", not sharp points. (maybe .025 mm radius)
The front 1/4 blade portion is quite sharp, with a medium surface.
I will try it, but will probably use a coarser stone to re-sharpen.

I am not a fan of belt attachment clips; seems too easy to fall off.
It can easily be removed w/ 3 tiny screws.

The handle attachment ring is small.
I installed a 3/4" split ring, which will easily accommodate a carabineer.

Yes, I noticed it is a little "pointy" too... I may order one of the Fury ones just to keep in the truck.
I may have to try softening up the bitey parts, myself. It's not terribly uncomfortable, but the feel of it in hand could use some improvement.

Another gem from the archives. Amazing that any question I come with is only a search away. I wondered what everyone thinks about ability to cut ropes away pronto, just in case. Hearing that Of course the Silky can do it in a fly, but next I am learning fine knife details from @GregManning , grounding in what I already know, and being introduced to some top notch knife makers to look for. may get one of those Myerchins, that thing is just too cool...
