Whipping thread for eyesplice

Is there a good substitute for whipping thread that I can find at a local hardware store. I am making a french prussik using 3/8 Yalex. Hate to buy a spool when I only need a few feet.

#18 braided mason line. Available at most hardware stores in 250' spools.

Whenever possible, I like to use strands of the rope I am splicing to lock stitch. Usually free, often available, and many times looks good because it blends right it (it's already made of the same material and the same color!)

TreeSpyder once reported that fishing line might be a good alternative, but I don't like that idea. I've heard of some using Zing-it for larger ropes.

i saw one of pro-climbers fly splices the other day and i was sure that it was whipped with zing-it
now you say that, it probably was.

I use waxed nylon that I bought from a shoe repair store, a spool only costs about $7.
